A few photos of our new Volvo skip wagon, another scrap related registration number, it’ll be on the road in April doing scrap collections and deliveries.
Photoshoot with the new Volvo this morning, a bit of a manic morning really, fortunately, we have a good team and dealt with it. At very busy times there are bound to be some delays, usually only minutes. At some of the yards we visit we’re expected to wait for hours to tip.

A new Linde H35 fork truck arrived last week. It’s our second H35, a 3.5 tonne container spec truck with a triple mast, side shift and Meyer heavy duty foundry grade rotator, essential for rotating stillages in our job. The triple mast allows us to load bulk tippers, rotating stillages into the body, also to tip racks of long aluminium or stainless steel onto the Copex shear loading hopper. The container specification allows the forks to travel to the top of the primary mast section with any gain in mast height, allowing loading in the restricted height of a container. We have in the past loaded a 1000 tonnes into containers for export but used a telehandler. These new trucks have a Deutz engine our original H30 had a VW engine and it worked every day for 15 years, it also had a faultless Meyer rotator. We also have five tonne forks for our Case 521XG, giving us three options for unloading at busy times.

Rainbow days, a lot colder and wilder than it looks.
Another load for the shear, keep it coming.

So, this was another attempt at designing a table with my four tonne flywheel, the one in the second photo here. This time I remembered to say that it was for a garden. The legs aren’t as nice as the previous ones but this time we have under table lighting. ChatGPT also gave a very precise spec, drawings, glass spec, foundation spec, you name it, a lot more information than the first time. It also offered an estimated cost but didn’t supply it when asked.
Shearing and baling with the Copex today, a building site cleanup. The tubes are high chrome and very tough, notice that they hardly compress. A customer heard a bit of gossip about us at another business down in Huddersfield today…they’ve heard that Schofields are closing 😂 Mmm not sure about that, nobody ran it by me, got more new equipment due any week, all paid for in full months ago. An acid ratio, a financial term to describe the ability of a business to pay its debts, of one is ok, 1.3 is good, it means that for every pound you owe you have liquid, easily available, assets of £1.30 to pay what you owe, ours is over 22, one of the highest in the industry-just saying 😉 Whoever supplies us, whatever they supply us with, no matter the amount, will have the option to be paid immediately and we pay over 90% of our suppliers the same day, the rest are choosing to be paid at a later date for their own reasons. Conversely, and, unfortunately, we have companies who we supply taking up to four months from invoice, sometimes five months from the point of delivery to pay us-not other scrap companies I might add. Despite this, we are still one of the most liquid companies in the industry. People who are financially aware will know that a high acid ratio indicates that a company isn’t utilising its money as effectively as it could in business, fortunately, that sort of s**t is my decision, I like running the business extremely conservatively, eccentrically conservatively….maybe, dgaf, still my choice….and the money is invested and earning very good rates of interest. Not shutting down, not going bust, not short of money….however quite a few in this industry have and are…tread carefully if you sell scrap, three very big bankruptcies lately.

A four tonne cast flywheel. I asked the question, should it go or should it stay on my own Instagram account earlier today. I’ve already broken the first one a few weeks ago and I haven’t decided what to do with this one. The first one has already been remelted and made into something new. Should I try to sell it, break it or keep it for myself. It’d make a garden ornament or a table for a large garden and I do have room for it. I often think about putting stuff in my garden but by know it would be an extension of the yard. Anyway, I asked ChatGPT to make it into a table with a glass top and steel legs, telling it the size and weight-I think it’s made a pretty good job. Swipe through to see.
