Today is the day I will try to put into words what Chrissy meant to me, and everyone at Mission Racing.
Sorry it has taken this long to put the words together Chrissy, but after a week of tears I’m slowly coming to terms that each and every one of those tears is connected to a memory you effortlessly created, Memories I’m forever grateful that I can keep forever.
I’m a little too old for social media of late but I feel it’s the perfect place to share these memories, hopefully they might help in a small way to comfort your family and friends during this devastating time.
I don’t need to talk too much about the racing, your fellow competitors, teams, friends, commentators, trophies and titles say just how strong and successful you were on a race bike, I’ll talk about you.
We met in 2016 and during our pre season testing I was introduced to your wicked sense of humour in person. J from mission had put you to the top of mission racing’s hit list down to your off bike efforts just as much as your on bike antics and even though you were still a boy your sense of humour was just so infectious to everyone, just like your giggle. Some of the team still talk about the time we headed off to a pub near Snetterton to “get to know each other” as testing was totally rained off, that rain being the main reason Dave L wrote off his bike during his sighting lap. Getting to know each other while Terry passed around photos of which I’ll not detail, and out came that giggle, and that sense of humour which just kept on growing, passed down from your Dad, Martin.
That humour….. always makes me smile when I see I still have my personal hotspot password set as “foulchicken”… When I used that famous Sid the sexist line on you due to your Nando’s work and the Geordie accent, which then became the line you would use on the team Tinder evenings.
Thinking about your time at Nando’s, as a team we would often take advantage of your staff discount, used once near Knockhill…. While I was eating and drinking ( taking full advantage of the fact you didn’t drink so I always had a taxi back ) you were helping the waiting girls tidy up for the closure, arranging all the sauce bottles getting to know everything about them, as it was never about you, being a “superstar bike racer”. Always fully engaged with what the others had to say, but “do you watch Eurosport” may have entered the conversation once or twice if asked. A line from a university friend, maybe Lewy. That natural caring nature came from your mam, Karen, and despite your fierce and undeniable talent to race a bike I’m going to say that is your biggest attribute. You were just so caring towards others. You would care about your friends’ taste in music, becoming a big fan of that music yourself because it brought joy. You know just about every single lyric to the Bruce Springsteen back catalogue down to Pete “piggy” being such a big fan. You would just sing along rather than change the music, because you’re so caring. I do take a lot of comfort that you contacted me a couple of weeks ago to ask me to guess which song you chose for the BSB superpole Q2 lap, Everlong was my immediate answer, the song we would belt out while setting up the race awning singing flat out before we would head out to the nearest pub with a pool table so I could kick your ass at something, and take advantage of the free taxi back.
Your 21st birthday was spent belly laughing in Portugal, as we were coaching on a track day at Portimao…. Being thrifty I booked the hotel around 10 streets back from the beach front and upon arriving to the 2 star at best cheap hotel thinking whooooops, what have I booked, I remember the delight on your face when we found the pool table in the bar area….. we played, I won, again. Then the delight went up a gear when the girl came to work behind the bar and you set about getting to know everything about her, naturally targeting the normally unapproachable 10 out of 10’s “Raffa” obviously arranged to meet you that night after her work. I think it was the “do you watch Eurosport”line that did it….. and she turned up to meet you, you in your blue chequered shirt and red shorts….
One of my favourite racing memories is when you lost the front, on the last lap, leading the race at Silverstone. That bit wasn’t great, but when we came to check on you at the medical centre you appeared all strapped up, bruised and said “sorry s**g, god loves a tryer” with your big smile. And of course all our podiums were something else….. you were spectacular to watch on a race bike, over 21 thousand people have responded to the BSB post about this heart wrenching news.
Every team owner believes they have the best team, but during 2016/2017 I did have the best team ever. Not at all to do with me, it was the people involved. The absolute best team of people.
Another team owner once said of Mission Racing, “it’s just a bunch of mates going racing”. During this time with Chrissy and all involved, as we kept collecting the trophies, I took that as a compliment, not the insult intended.
Mission Racing was a dream that we all lived and was set up to help young talent progress to heights we couldn’t reach with them. Chrissy, we wanted to help make you “better”. But you made me better. You made me better, happier, more ambitious and prouder. So proud. If you were to be sold as a drug we would all be addicted.
Karen, Martin, Katie, Grace and Betsy, I’m so thankful I was there to share so many amazing times with you all. My deepest, heartfelt condolences I send to you, and I extend all those condolences to Chrissy’s friends, of which there are too many to list. I’ve had so many messages sent to me from this amazing group of friends that have a bond that’s unexplainable, but tight. I think we all share this bond through the care, humour and love of life Chrissy brought to us all.
Chrissy. You would tell me about the posters on your wall of the superbike racing heroes you had as a kid, to be racing against them, and often beating them was something very special to you.
I have a poster of you on my wall, you were something special to me.
RIP my dear friend. I’ll always love you.

Things taking shape and lots to talk about soon !!!!!!
Today will never be forgotten, I really wish I wasn’t writing this but we have lost such a big personality in our racing family. I’m personally very lucky to have know Ben and I’ve so many good memories to cherish. Ben was mission’s first rider and will always hold a big place in my heart and be sorely missed. Another young and good person taken too soon. Everyone who is/was involved with Mission Racing will be thinking about Steve , Corrine , Jess , Jordan, Jeremy and all the lovely family. RIP Ben .
Not sure how this works but: if any of my friends have elderly or vulnerable family in Yorkshire / south Lancashire and need supplies/food to be dropped in with them then give me a shout. As my business doors are now shut for the foreseeable I’d like to volunteer my time / transport. Obviously this would be done as safely as possible ( gloves / mask / doorstep ). I have an Aldi, morrisons and co-op close to me so these would be the places I’d collect. Feel free to share and get in touch. Oh and also , I’ll be sticking within the speed limits 😉
