The tee markers this weekend are phenomenal.

So good in fact that an official collects them behind the last group, on the reasonable assumption that so fans might fancy themselves a souvenir.

The 4th and 8th greens at Huntercombe rightly get all the plaudits, but all eighteen are surrounded by humps and hollows that leave far more interesting recoveries than a bunker shot ever could.

Huntercombe's clubhouse is one of the greats. You could easily spend as long reading the boards and the history on the walls as you did out on the course.

2 hours on the course, 2 hours at lunch and 2 hours soaking in the history feels like a good split.

Walker Cup trivia: what was unique about the 1922 singles match between Jess Sweetser and Chubby Hooman?

Answer: It is the only match in Walker Cup history to go to extra holes.

With the overall result already decided and no officials left out on the course, the two simply decided to carry on. Hooman won at the first extra hole, after Sweetser went for the green and drove out of bounds.

Bernard Darwin later said “When two men have halved a 36 hole match in the Walker Cup, they have earned an immediate drink with no further demands on them.”
