Inverness Cathedral Bellringers

There were nine of us for service ringing this morning. We rang up the back four bells in pairs, then the front six in peal.
We rang some rounds and call changes to rollercoaster and back on nine bells, missing out bell 2 of the ten.
We then rang some plain courses of Plain Bob Minor on the back six bells, with bells 1, 3 and 4 ringing constantly in order at the front.
We finished with some more rounds and call changes to queens and kings and back, and then lowered the front six, then the back four, in peal.
Some good ringing again this morning - well done everyone 😃🔔

We have quite a few people away at the moment, but mustered 7 ringers for this evening's advanced practice.
Having rung up 3-6 in peal (a couple of wobbles but recovered) we rang up the trebles and started with some Plain Bob Doubles on 5. Heather arrived and we then rang a touch of Plain Bob Doubles with a tenor cover. Nick arrived so we rang a touch of Plain Bob Minor (lots of singles) and then we rang some plain courses of Stedman Doubles. A 120 of Plain Bob Minor was next with a mixture of singles and bobs and then a touch of Plain Bob Doubles. Next was a course of Kent Minor and then some Plain Bob Minor with Barbara on treble. We had a go at a touch of Stedman Doubles but that didn't work unfortunately. We just had time for another course of Kent before ringing down 6 in peal watched by two handbell ringers from Calgary who came up for a quick look at the end of our practice.

A fairly warm one again, but a useful evening.

Some good ringing again this morning, thank you to everyone who came. We are definitely getting much better at ringing up and down in peal.

Another warm evening in the tower; and (for the North of Scotland) an unusually high number of pairs of shorts being worn in the ringing room!

This was a general practice, given a number of our regulars were unavailable. However, 8 locals were joined by 2 ringers from Nantwich, Diana and Roger, which allowed us to ring on all 10 bells. We also had a brief visit from an Inverness non-ringer which allowed us to give him a flavour of what we do and- under supervision from Nick- a short ring of one of the bells.

We rang up the back four in pairs, then bells 1, 3 and 5 in peal followed by 2, 4 and 6 in peal.

During the evening we variously had:
Rounds and call changes on 6 and on 8, and rounds on 10, the first time Diana and Roger had rung on 10;
Plain Bob Doubles;
Plain Bob Minor;
Plain Bob doubles on the back six with treble and two ringing constantly at the front;
Kent Minor, plain course and then 3 leads;
Plain bob doubles on front six with 7, 6, 8 following behind.

To finish we rang down the front 6 in peal followed by the back 4 in peal. 🔔

Tonight was an advanced practice which was a PLO (potential lock out) until Michael arrived a bit late with my keys (as I've been away for a few weeks). We had 6 ringers to start with so rang up the front 6 and proceeded to ring a long touch of Plain Bob Doubles with Barbara inside. Next was plain courses of Stedman Doubles. Marcus arrived to boost our number but we continued with another touch of Plain Bob Doubles and then another course of Stedman Doubles, including a silent touch of Stedman Doubles (no singles were called but Marcus and I made singles when we were at the back together.. this was so that the other ringers who are perfecting their plain course wouldn't be distracted by the calls). Next was Kent Minor followed by another touch of Plain Bob Doubles with some more random calls at the end to make it unpredictable..I managed to call that round at hand stroke!). We rang another course of Kent and then had some treble bob hunting for Barbara. Michael led us down in peal with me giving guidance.

Despite lots of people being away I think tonight was a useful practice. Missed lots of our regulars though. Come back soon please 🥰

We finished by ringing the front four, and then the back four, down in peal.
The Ellacombe chiming apparatus was then set up ready for this evening’s Choral Evensong service.

There were 9 ringers for our improvers practice.
We rang up bells 2, 4 and 6 in peal, then bells 1, 3 and 5 in peal, before finally ringing up bell 7 and bells 8, 9 and 10 in peal.
During the evening we rang some plain courses and a touch of Grandsire Doubles and some plain courses of Bob Doubles.
We also did various exercises to help practice our striking:
- round and call changes on 8
- plain hunt on bells 1-3 with three cover bells
- plain hunt on bells 4-6 with the front 3 bells leading steadily
- diminishing rounds on 8
- diminishing back rounds on 8
- rounds but starting in Queens
We finished by ringing down the front 6 then the back 4 in peal.
Some interesting and unusual things tonight. Well done everyone.

We rang the back four up in pairs, and then the front six in peal. However for our ringing we rang 9 of the bells, missing out the 2.
To start we rang some rounds and call changes on 9 bells to queens, kings, rollercoaster and back, and then rang some Grandsire Triples on the back eight, with the treble constantly ringing in the lead.
We finished by ringing the front six, and back four, down in peal.

Despite several regulars being away, including our tower captain, we had 12 ringers for our advanced practice tonight including 2 visitors, one from Lincoln and the other from Chester.

We rang up the back bells in pairs followed by the front 6 in peal.
First off was a couple of courses of Grandsire Triples, which- like the rest of the session- had a strong focus on good striking and listening to our bells, with lots of helpful prompts for accuracy from Nick, who was kindly running this evening’s ringing in the absence of Anthony.

Next was some rounds and call changes on 10, to rollercoaster. Then plain hunt on 9, followed by rounds and call changes on 8, using the Dorian scale, which was an interesting and unusual exercise.
Then, more plain hunt on 9 and Grandsire triples, followed by some plain bob triples. Finally, before ringing down, we rang plain bob doubles on the back 6 with the front 4 bells ringing in the order 1324, which is something we do on a Sunday morning for service ringing, so useful practise for that.
