Inverness Cathedral Bellringers

There were eight of us for service ringing this morning. It was a special service today to honour James Braidwood, known as the "father of the modern fire service."
We rang the back four bells up in pairs and then bells 3 to 6 of the ten up in peal.
Hugh kindly conducted some rounds and call changes to queens, kings and back.
After a quick rest we rang some more rounds and call changes to rollercoaster and back.
We lowered the front four, and then the back four, in peal.
There were a few regulars away this morning, but we rang really well.

This evening was our first advanced practice of autumn. We had 7 ringers so kept to just the front 6 bells. Initially we had only 5 so rang up 2-6 and rang a touch of Plain Bob Doubles for Barbara. Next was a touch of Grandsire Doubles. Nicky arrived so we had another go at Grandsire Doubles, this time with a tenor cover. Next was a touch of Plain Bob Minor with Barbara on the treble and then a course of Kent Minor for Michael. Plain courses of Little Bob Minor were next and then another go at Grandsire Doubles for Rachel. We rang more Little Bob Minor and then some courses splicing Plain and Little Bob Minor. We finished with a touch of Spliced Plain and Little Bob Minor and rang down in peal.

Eight of us this morning for service ringing, including one of our regular visitors from Lancashire. We were joined in the ringing room by the same two spectators as last week.

We only needed to ring up the back four bells (in pairs), as the front 6 were left up after Friday’s wedding ringing. We rang two different sets of rounds and call changes with a short break in between, including rollercoaster, Queens, Kings and Titums. We then rang the front six down in peal followed by back four in peal. 🔔

This evening was a little different as we had two visitors who had come for a taster session to see what we do and have a few lessons. We started with a safety briefing and a tour of the bells and then I rang up the 4th and gave each of them a go at backstroke. We then gave each of them a go at chiming the tenor as that is always good fun on a taster session. By this time 6 of our band had arrived so we rang up the bells (back bells in pairs, then 2-6 in peal (having rung the 4 back down first), followed by the treble) and rang some Plain Bob Doubles, after explaining what we were about to do. After another quick go each (including a go at handstroke) Annie May left and we rang plain hunt on 7.. not particularly well if truth be told 😳 We had more Plain Bob Doubles for Derry and then another go for Louise which included her ringing the backstroke to rounds on the front 6 😁 We finished with call changes on 8 (including Whittington's, Kings and Queens) before ringing down the back 4. We left the front 6 up as there is a wedding in the cathedral tomorrow afternoon that we will be ringing for.

This evening prior to evensong we rang a quarter peal of Plain Bob Doubles which was Barbara's first quarter peal "inside"😁 Good striking mostly too.. an excellent quarter 😀

There was a full complement of ten of us again this morning for service ringing, all locals. We were joined in the ringing room by two spectators, one a 2-year old, starting to enjoy her ringing from a young age.

We rang the back four bells up in pairs, followed by bells 3-6 in peal, then the 2 trebles once a couple of late arrivals had appeared.

We rang some rounds and call changes to rollercoaster and back, and then a course of Plain Bob Triples. We did some more rounds and call changes, to Queens and Kings and back, then rang the back four down in peal. The front six have been left up for this afternoon’s quarter peal attempt. 🔔

Although there are quite a few of our ringers away, we had 7 ringers at our advanced practice this evening.
We started with just 6 so we rang up the front 6 and then rang the first 300 changes of a quarter peal of Plain Bob Doubles to help prepare Barbara for her first attempt at a quarter peal on an inside bell (which we will be attempting before evensong on Sunday). Next was a couple of courses of Stedman Doubles and then a 240 of Plain Bob Doubles.. so this evening we have rung all the 120s and the 60 that will be rung repeatedly to make up the quarter peal. Hugh arrived so we moved on to a course of Kent Minor before moving on to Little Bob Minor which Michael had requested (and Ian seconded). We had several goes at this with different ringers inside so that everyone had a go. Having made it look fairly easy I stepped up the complexity by splicing Plain Bob Minor and Little Bob Minor.. no bobs initially.. again doing it a few times to give all the inside ringers a go (and stretch Barbara on the treble). We had a few goes at a touch of spliced, but sadly that didn't work, although the mental gymnastics definitely went down well with the band 😁 We had one final course of Stedman Doubles before ringing down in peal.

Having prepared touches of Cloister Triples (to aid us learning the bobs to Stedman Triples) it was a shame not to have enough ringers to actually have a go at it, but we definitely had fun with the spliced .. well done guys 😁

We rang the back four bells up in pairs, followed by the front six in peal.
We rang some rounds and call changes to queens and kings and back, and then rang some Plain Bob doubles on the back six, with bells 1-4 ringing constantly in order at the front.
We then rang some more rounds and call changes to rollercoaster and back then rang the front six, followed by the back four, down in peal.
There was some lovely ringing again this morning thanks to Nick guiding our striking, well done everyone 🥰🔔

Despite many of our experienced regulars being away, we had 8 ringers for a general practice tonight.

We started with some ringing up exercises on the front 6 bells. Thereafter, we variously did plain courses of Grandsire Doubles, rounds on 6 (focusing on our striking) and then the same but pulling off in Queens, then Kings, then Titums, and several touches and a few plain courses of Plain Bob Doubles. Finally, we rang the front 6 down in peal.

We first rang up the back four bells in pairs, then the front six in peal. We progressed on to rounds and call changes- to queens and back.

After a quick change of personnel, we then rang a plain course of Plain Bob Triples on the back eight bells, with bells 1 and 2 ringing constantly in order at the front.

We moved on to rounds and call changes- this time to rollercoaster and back. Finally, we lowered the front six, then the back four, in peal.

Some good ringing again this morning - well done everyone. We were rewarded with coffee in the Palace Hotel, with 10 attendees. 😃🔔
