GWO Version 20 – are you ready for the September deadline?

GWO Basic Safety Training Version 20 came into effect on 10 March 2026, with the six-month transition period ending on 10 September 2026.

Whether you're booking your own training or coordinating training for others, there are a number of changes worth being aware of when planning upcoming courses.

Some of the key changes under BST Version 20 include:

• Working at Height and Manual Handling are now separate modules and must be maintained independently
• Initial and Refresher training will be delivered separately
• Refresher training has been updated, with a greater focus on practical, scenario-based learning
• Working at Height practical and rescue activities have been updated
• New Walk-to-Work content has been introduced within Sea Survival

There are also changes to Advanced Rescue Training (ART) Version 6, including the removal of standalone Single Rescuer courses, with these competencies incorporated into the relevant ART modules.

One change particularly worth checking is Working at Height and Manual Handling currency. Completing ART-NR will no longer automatically renew these qualifications, so they will need to be maintained separately through the appropriate BST Refresher modules.

With the 10 September deadline approaching, now is a good time to check WINDA records, expiry dates and refresher requirements to make sure the right training is booked and avoid any unexpected gaps in certification or delays to mobilisation.
