Today we share our disappointment of continued illegal, off-road vehicles being used at Eglinton Country Park👇

While we are encouraged by the hundreds of visitors who respectfully enjoy our local country park while leaving no trace, we are extremely disappointed to learn that off road vehicles have been sighted in and around the park.

This behaviour is disrespectful, dangerous and illegal 😠

It shows a blatant disregard for public safety and for the vibrancy of our green spaces and the delicate ecosystem of our local country park.

In Scotland, the law is clear - the only places where off-road vehicles can lawfully be ridden is on private land with the direct permission of the landowner or at an organised, supervised off-road centre❗

Quad bikes and e-scooters should not be used in public parks, common land or on beaches as this is illegal and causes noise pollution and damage to public spaces. They also cannot be used on public roads, paths or cycle lanes.

Information regarding illegal vehicle use can be passed to Police Scotland officers through 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Today is World Ranger Day.

When you hear the word "ranger," what do you see?

A wildlife protector?
A firefighter?
A scientist?
A teacher?
A first responder?
A mentor?
A guardian of nature?

The truth is... a ranger is all of these, and so much more.

Every day, rangers wear many hats. They protect endangered species, monitor ecosystems, respond to wildfires, collect critical conservation data, inspire the next generation, support local communities and safeguard the natural and cultural heritage that sustains us all.

Their work rarely makes headlines, but its impact is felt around the world.

This , take a moment to recognise the incredible diversity, dedication and professionalism of the global ranger workforce. Behind every healthy ecosystem, thriving wildlife population and protected landscape are men and women whose commitment helps shape a better future for us all.

Because protecting our planet isn't one job, it's thousands of acts of courage, compassion and commitment, carried out every single day.

Today, we celebrate every role. Every ranger. Everywhere.

It's been a whirlwind of a July (serves me right for taking a week off!), so here is a condensed post of all the Volunteer work over the course of the month. Lots of work continuing between the stone bridge and the Ice House (and beyond, towards the Doocot) with a short break giving the overflow car park a bit of TLC on Mondays, and continuing to hack into the balsam on a Friday. Last week was our final balsam session of the year- it was a big push this Spring and Summer, but it's a good step on the way to controlling this invasive w**d. Tools have certainly helped!

A couple of Sundays ago we had the amazing folks from Ayrshire Rivers Trust run a training workshop afternoon for our Junior Rangers!
They kick-started the session with a demo on electro-fishing to survey the river Lugton that runs through Eglinton Country Park . It was just a quick survey but so far the results are very promising- yes that is a European eel! I'm so excited!
The second half dealt with bank erosion and how to use green engineering to rebuild depleted, eroded banks in such a way that not only does it help build the bank up again, but the willow stakes will grow into trees that help shade and cool the water for the residents; both vertebrate and invertebrate!
massive thanks to Ayrshire Rivers Trust, they do a terrific job and they certainly inspired the next generation on this afternoon.

Remember we have this tomorrow morning. It's a free, drop in session, suitable for the family, but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
We'll be set up in the Courtyard from 10-11:30, so pop by and say hello at any time! With any luck we'll be looking at notable Noctuids, great Geometrids and who knows... maybe even some splendid Siphingids or excellent Erebids??? 😮

Drop-in session - No need to prebook! Come along and meet us on Wednesday 15 July! 🦋🐸🐛

North Ayrshire Council Ranger Service will be set up in the Courtyard between 10am and 11:30 with an exciting and fascinating topic around wildlife.

Will we be marvelling at the magic of moths, or pondering the peculiarities of pond life?

This is a free, drop-in session suitable for all the family. Drop in any time to discover more...
