Caddis fly larvae is soft-bodied and vulnerable - so it plucks bits and pieces from the pond and sticks them to it’s body. Piece by piece it builds a moving disguise. People do something similar and may end up hiding from themselves.

Don’t be a shadow and hide yourself from the world. Instead, try to live up to ideal of what you believe you should be. Don’t hold back for fear of others.

I was happily driving down a quiet country lane heading towards Newcastle, Co. Down with the panorama of the Mourne Mountains looming ever larger as the miles went by (This corner of the world is incredibly beautiful). Then suddenly I swerved and managed to mainly miss a large pothole in the road. For the rest of my journey I was worried about the wheel and vigilant for more potholes. As a result I saw less of the scenery.

This got me thinking. More than 99% of the road was smooth and non-threatening, but it was the 1% (the pothole) which once encountered occupied my thoughts. Is this how I should live? Worried about potholes? I know not.

I reached for my favourite quotes which have shifted my own world view and would help switch off from being too much of a pothole spotter.

“A coward dies many times, the brave only once.” From Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar,

“Be aware of angels cloaked as strangers” from Hebrews (13.2)

“Without vision the people perish” from Proverbs (29:18).

These quotes are my friends and over time have shifted my perspective on life. I know that live to life well I need to see the beauty of the world and its panorama, as well as be alive to potholes. To focus on potholes solely is to keep you safe but to miss the view!

Extremes (pretty much in anything) are a warning sign to me.

So as I sit here thinking about how I can be more active and engaged as a coach, mentor, and member of my local community. May I encourage you to lift your eyes up from the metaphorical potholes you see in your workplace and non-workplace, and intentionally see the beautiful panorama all around you. If you look for good you will see it, be lifted up, and add to the panorama.

If any of my posts resonate with you please repost or share them. It all helps.
