Week 13 proved unlucky for most today, as 18 Seniors took on the challenge of strong wind, rain, and sun!

Top of this week's list was Jerry Turner with 34 points, followed closely by John Hodgson on 33 & five others on 32 & 31.

There was just one TWO from Steve Busfield on the 13th.

Dave Raby still has a very handy lead to take into the last 3 weeks, but the minor places are very much up for grabs with some people still to complete 8 Scores.

Many thanks to all who played in the Seniors friendly against Bracken Ghyll on Wednesday 29th July.

The match was played in the true spirit of golf and thanks to a pair of 2's on the 18th hole, from Roger Smales and David Raby, Branshaw were victorious with a final scoreline of 31/2 to 21/2.

The seniors' Summer League continued, with 14 players competing in Week 12 under calm, warm conditions.

Andy Bennett was this week's winner with 37 points – Jerry Turner just missing out with 36.

League leader Dave Raby still managed to be amongst the prizes, winning the Par 3 Gross Comp and collecting the only TWO of the day.

With just 4 weeks to go, Dave will be difficult to catch with a lead of 22 points, but the minor places are very much up for grabs, especially with some people still to post 8 qualifying scores,

A word of congratulations to Duncan McAndrew, who stood in at the last minute to make up the numbers for the Seniors Friendly with Addingham on Wednesday and scored a Hole in ONE on the 13th.

Week 11 brought more sunshine and no wind as 14 seniors competed.

League Leader Dave Raby posted a score of 39 but was pipped on a back nine countback by Cameron Dawson, making his first appearance of the summer.

Jerry Turner was in third place with the only other below-par score on 37 points – No twos were recorded.

Dave’s 39 has stretched his lead at the top, and some consistent good scoring will be needed to overhaul him.

Fifteen seniors turned out on a very warm morning. This week's winner was Eric Younger with 35 points, and in second place on a countback was Keith Tubman: 34 points.

Two's this week, David Raby and Keith Tubman.

Due to our summer league organiser being away on holiday, the leaderboard will be updated later.

I will not be around next week, so I'm not sure who will be running the competition. If you can, please turn up.

The Branshaw course showed its teeth to 18 seniors contesting the 4BBB in 30mph winds gusting to 40mph.

Only 2 pairs managed to break PAR, an indication of the difficulties the wind created.

The two pairs (John Dickenson & Dave Raby, last year's winners) and (Dave Phillips & Steve Busfield) tied on 39 points, with Dave & Steve just edging the win on a back-nine countback, 23/21.

No twos were recorded, but special mention to Bill Dakin, who was definitely the best-turned-out player in his Chequered plus fours, complemented by bright pink socks!

The summer league resumes for the next two weeks before the Senior Open on 23rd July – Just £5 to enter. Book your tee time with Steve

Can you declare a ball lost in golf rules
Short answer:
No — under the Rules of Golf, you cannot simply declare a ball lost. A ball only becomes lost after a full three‑minute search has taken place and the ball has not been found.

🏌️ What the Rules Actually Say (Rule 18.2)
A ball is officially lost only when:

You (or your caddie/partner) begin searching for it.

Three minutes of search time elapse without finding it.

If the ball is found within three minutes, you must attempt to identify it. If you cannot identify it within a reasonable time, it is still treated as lost.

You cannot declare a ball lost early because you prefer to play your provisional ball. You must search for the full three minutes.

🕒 Why You Can’t Declare It Lost
The rule prevents players from skipping the search to gain an advantage (e.g., choosing a nicer provisional lie). The Rules require the search to be completed so that:

You don’t abandon a ball that might be easily found.

Pace of play is protected by limiting the search to three minutes (reduced from five).

🚩 What Happens When the Ball Is Lost?
If the ball is not found after three minutes:

It is lost under Rule 18.2.

You must take stroke‑and‑distance relief:

Go back to where the previous stroke was played.

Add one penalty stroke (effectively two shots: the stroke + replaying the shot).
