🌧️ The Famous Five: Bodmin Moor Mizzle & Milestones! 🐎✨

There is an old saying: 'To go fast, go alone; to go far, go together.' At the Camelford ride last Sunday, five incredible horse and rider combinations lived this philosophy to the absolute fullest, conquering the challenging 80km route side-by-side from start to finish!

This legendary group—now affectionately known as the 'Famous Five'—consisted of the inspiring partnerships of Claire Golding & Baarbarella, Kelly Dennis & CF Vilette, Julian Johansen & CF Samuel, Tanya Southworth & CF Mirabelle and Lesley Nott & Allaskar’s Scout.

True to form, Cornwall delivered its famous 'mizzle'—that quintessential, heavy blend of mist and drizzle that blankets the moorland (and get's you really rather wet!). But while the weather was damp, the spirits of our riders and horses were absolutely soaring. Navigating Bodmin Moor is no small feat under perfect conditions, let alone in the thick of a Cornish mist. Yet, this remarkable group decided early on that they were in it together.

Over steep inclines, open peatlands, and quiet country lanes, they kept pace with one another, offering words of encouragement, sharing snacks at checkpoints, and keeping a watchful eye on each other's mounts. Over the undulating landscape of Bodmin Moor, the riders faced testing terrain, navigating the historic granite landmarks and open sweeping vistas that make the South West so uniquely challenging for endurance sport.

Crossing the finish line of an 80km Graded Endurance Ride is a massive milestone for any individual partnership. But crossing it in unison, with all five horses vetting through successfully, is really some achievement. It highlights the absolute best of our sport: the welfare of the horse and the strength of the community.

A massive, heartfelt thank you goes out to our incredible volunteers, landowners, and organisers who stood out in the mizzle to make this day possible. You are the backbone of Endurance GB!

Three Rivers Results 🐴

It was a weekend of incredible milestones and inspiring partnerships. In the long-distance classes, Elizabeth Rowland and Drumcall Revel put in a phenomenal performance to complete the 123km 2-Day GER. As the sole entry, Elizabeth was grateful for the camaraderie on course, getting superb "tows" from Caroline Cowley and Santa Ana Mist on Saturday, and Linda Jordan on Miss Masquerade on Sunday, finishing at 11.7kph with a 51bpm heart rate.

South East member Katie Dickinson and Gerko de Tenelle topped Saturday's 43km GER, flying round at 14kph with a finishing heart rate of 40 to achieve a Performance Formula of 47.50—the highest score across the entire event! Meanwhile, Paul Simmons had a highly successful weekend; his veteran 17-year-old homebred Zayin Zachilles roared to victory in Sunday's 43km GER at 15kph (46 HR), after his young mare Protocol Zayin took third in Saturday's 34km Novice GER.

In the 51km GER, Miranda Kavanagh and Bey Dashar paced themselves beautifully despite the afternoon heat, aided by passing race riders and refreshing sugar beet water from the lovely team at CP6.

Our novice stars also shone. On Saturday, Dominic Smith and 22-year-old George Bush secured a Grade 1 win in the 25km Novice Foundation GER at 12.8kph. On Sunday, Corinne Staples and Pauldary's Nixie claimed victory in the 34km Novice GER with a Grade 1 at 12.3kph, celebrating alongside friends completing their very first endurance rides.

A massive thank you to organisers Charlotte Robinson, Frances, Mid-South Endurance Group, and the incredible volunteers, stewards, and vets who made this wonderful event run so smoothly.

🇬🇧 Incredible Teamwork and Outstanding Results in Portugal! 🇵🇹

A massive congratulations to Linda Cowperthwaite and Nikki Thorne on a sensational weekend of endurance riding at Barroca d'Alva, Portugal!

On Saturday, Linda rode the promising 7-year-old mare Pataca VB in the CEI1* 100km, navigating heat and varied terrain. Prioritising a positive and confident international debut over chasing placings, Linda and Pataca finished in an outstanding 6th place at an average speed of 16.55 kmph! 🌟

But the magic did not stop there. On Sunday, the roles reversed in a brilliant demonstration of mutual support! Linda swapped her riding boots for crewing gear to support Nikki Thorne as she tackled the CEI3* 160km. Riding ER Danique in the mare’s very first 160km ride, Nikki delivered a positive ride to finish in 16th place at 14.61 kmph! 👏💨

Linda shared these words about their memorable weekend:

"I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to ride Pataca VB, a 7-year-old mare, in the CEI 100km at Barroca... My priority was to give Pataca a positive international experience, keep a cool head and, above all, look after the horse. ... Ensuring Pataca VB finished confidently and positively was the most important thing"

What a fantastic showcase of teamwork, sportsmanship, and equine care on the world stage! We are incredibly proud of both combinations and their hardworking support teams. 🇬🇧❤️

This scenic location offers a beautiful route across managed field headlands and quiet country lanes, with minimal roadwork (only 15%)—perfect for a wonderful day out with your horse.

The star of the show at Avon Valley is the legendary Team Spirit Competition! If you love team building and sharing the joy of endurance riding, this is the class for you.

The Team Spirit is an exciting 140km relay race designed for teams of four horse-and-rider combinations. Here is how it works:

The First Pair: Two combinations from your team will set off together to tackle the 40km loop as a pair. Once successfully home, they hand over the imaginary baton!

The Second Pair: Your team's second pair takes up the baton and sets out on a 30km loop to bring the relay home.

The winning team will be the one with the shortest overall riding time combined with the highest number of successful completions. It is all about teamwork, pacing, and supporting one another! Team members will need to enter the special Team Spirit classes.

Are you ready to slay the dragon? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 This is your final reminder that entries for the legendary British Horse Feeds Red Dragon Festival of Endurance 2026 close tomorrow (Monday 14th September)!

Taking place at the spectacular Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells on the 26th & 27th September, this is the ultimate end-of-season celebration you do not want to miss.

If you need one more inspiring story to get your entry in, look no further than the wonderful Amanda Carson! Amanda is heading back to Powys with her gorgeous Connemara pony, Kelpie, to tackle the 2-day 78km challenge: The Dragon's Egg! 🥚✨

Here is Amanda's brilliant journey in her own words:

💬 "It's a fair way to Builth Wells from West Cumbria, but Kelpie, my Connemara, and I ventured down to The Dragon in 2023 when Kelpie was six.

We did the Dragon's Claw, which is two 25k novice foundation rides. It was fabulous and we so enjoyed the weekend, browsing the stalls, trying out new massage machines, and overeating!

In 2024, we came back to try the Dragon's Egg Novice 44/34. For me, endurance is as much about exploring new places, and I wanted to try the different routes around the Red Dragon. I was devastated to get a heart rate of 65 on the second day! Kelpie was fine; she coughed during the vetting which might have added that extra beat. Heigh-ho, that's the way it is. We still won the Novice Polka Dot Challenge in 2024.

So, we are coming back in 2026 to slay that Red Dragon and doing the Dragon's Egg again.

The routes are fantastic. Aberedw Hill isn't that bad really, you just have to factor in that it takes time. Once you are up on the top, the views are amazing—wild ponies, bracken harvesting, picturesque valleys cuddled into the hills, and the going is brilliant.

As an old lady on a native pony, I was in awe of "the professionals" doing 80k plus, but those professionals were so friendly, and we had a great craic in the evenings. I learnt so much—tips on what gear you did or didn't need, favourite rides to try, and offers of help and support. It was what I had joined endurance for at its best.

So look out Red Dragon, we are coming to get you!!" 🦖💪

Wramplingham National Event Results 🐴

It was the second year this fantastic event has run, and it is certainly one that should be firmly in everyone’s calendars for next season. Our riders were treated to superb marking, excellent off-road riding on headlands across private estate land, absolutely no gates, and a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. The stunning tracks and farmland margins of Wramplingham Hall provided the perfect backdrop for some truly wonderful performances.

Our riders did a fantastic job managing their horses throughout the day, with welfare remaining at the heart of every decision. In competitive endurance, the horse's well-being is always our top priority, and it was wonderful to see such exemplary care given to these amazing equine athletes as they navigated the course.

In the 80km GER, Kathy Carr on Tannasg Storm and Amie Grainger aboard Vlacq Hi Jinx rode the entire distance together at 13.2kmph, with just 1 bpm separating their final scores. In the 50km Novice GER, it was a successful first vet gate experience for Leah Duckworth and Taqaddom, who was crowned National Novice Champion two weeks earlier.

In the 40km, Jacqueline Watson had a great ride with her Arab x Connemara mare, Princess Lulu. We also celebrated local duo Abigail Barker and Chilly Daze. Abigail lives in Saffron Walden and completed the 40km Novice GER after riding the 30km last year at Wramplingham.

In the 30km, Dominic Smith and his skewbald, 22-year-old George Bush, added another win to their names. Hilary Carr and her Irish Horse Register mare, Beechmount Gabby, topped their class. Age is just a number, as Niamh Richardson and the 13hh (Redwings) Milky Way showed they are still going strong at 23 in the 20km Novice Foundation GER!

A massive thank you to our ride organiser Heather Plasted, secretary Valerie Chaplin, and the Iceni group for putting on such an enjoyable event. We are also deeply grateful to the volunteers, stewards, vets, and officials whose dedication made it possible.

With some incredibly tight margins—especially in the Seniors with just 12 points separating the top two—the final outcome is going to be a thrilling reveal!

To inspire you to take the plunge, we asked Mid and North Wales EGB member Karen Cadman—who is entered in the flagship 2-day 160km class on her striking Appaloosa mare, Cwmcynwal Cala—to share her journey:

💬 “When I first went to Red Dragon several years ago, I was in total awe of the 160km riders – How did they do it?? How could one horse and one rider go that distance over that terrain and still walk afterwards? But I knew that I wanted to do it someday. Fast forward to 2026 and we are entered!!!

It takes many years of training and a very special horse to take on ‘the Dragon’, but I am lucky to have that very special horse and we are both ready. I’ve suffered several devastating and life-changing events over the last few years and I’m not sure I’d still be standing had I not had horses in my life. The long hours spent training and just being with them builds strong bonds. Cal and I have total respect and understanding of each other. We are a team and that is the most amazing feeling.

Red Dragon is our ‘local’ ride and I have the privilege of riding and training on the route. It is so stunningly beautiful with views whichever way you look. It really does feed the soul. It can also be challenging and demands respect. The weather can change in an instant and care and consideration of the terrain must be taken at all times.

If you are thinking of entering then DO IT. There is no better sense of achievement than crossing that finishing line with a sound and happy horse. If you are just starting out in Endurance or are challenging yourself with higher mileage or multi-day rides this time, the same warm welcome and support will await you.

Wonderful ride, wonderful venue, wonderful people. Can I tame a Dragon? I’ll sure be giving it my best shot! If you see me at the start line, my eyes may be watering!!!”

🏆 Scotland Champions 2026 | Home Internationals 2026 🏆

Scotland are the 2026 Home International Champions, taking home The Alba Cup after a fantastic performance at this year’s Home Internationals.

A thoroughly deserved win for Scotland, who have also been fantastic hosts for this year’s competition.

The Home Internationals brought together riders from all three nations for a weekend of competition, camaraderie and some seriously good endurance riding.

A huge congratulations to the Scottish team, their crews and supporters on 1st Place 🥇

And thank you to Scotland for giving the nations such a brilliant welcome.
