With the weather getting hotter the rivers and lakes are at rock bottom and the fishing getting difficult.
Derwentwater yesterday had a surface temperature of 24 degrees so pike fishing is out and even perch are feeling the heat.

Fortunately we have other options and we went down to the coast today in search of bass.
Very bright and blisteringly hot we saw some amazing birdlife but only saw one small bass of about a pound.....unfortunately it was held in the talons of an Osprey that almost made me jump out of my waders as it plunged in no more than 25 yards behind me and came out with the bass!!

While the rest of Britain is roasting in another heatwave.. now the rain has stopped we have been hiding under a grey blanket of mist and clouds on Lewis.
But there are some advantages ...
I stole a day fishing with legendary guide and musician Colin McLeod in appalling weather. Heavy rain and blustery winds didn't help.
The original plan was to hunt a few sea trout but the estuary was up and coloured after all the rain so after checking out a couple of unfishable places we drove across to fish a small spate river that Colin thought might provide some entertainment!
Good guides are worth their weight in fish and this was wild fishing at its best with lots of wee trout and a couple of bigger pound fish.
After strong coffee and lunch we bog trotted downriver and eventually met a bright bar of silver that was the icing on a very good but soggy cake!!
But don't mention heatwaves!!

Been a busy few months...so no apologies for a busy life.here's a few moments!
Some fine times on and by water with family, some remarkable folks and very good friends. Oh yes, fish and wildlife moments as well.
I'm proud to say I've an article in the July edition of 'Trout and Salmon'😁 and with more adventures in the offing and recent rainfall ..I feel a bad attack of fly fishing coming on...

Had a great session down the river today- Improving Steve's Nicholas' casting in preparation for a salmon fishing visit to the Spey. Double Spey casting all sorted we put a fly on and explored tactics!!
Quite a few salmon return to the sea after spawning regaining their silver coats.
Easily mistaken for a fresh fish they are beautifully coloured but thin and have maggots on their gills. These drop off when the fish enters salt water and starts feeding again.

Quickly returned, this one was the best confidence booster an angler can have and very welcome on a damp day.

Just spent a great day on Windermere. Pike fishing with good friends, in a great boat on a typical March day.
Only three fish but that's fair enough on any day with miles of wild water to explore.
No monsters but great to have a staff meeting on the water with our ace guide Wayne O Sullivan and legendary angler Andy Mac.
And the angler who returns home after a fishing session on a big lake is a far more contented person than the who closed the door that morning!!😉
