Northamptonshire Police’s Rural Crime Team is stepping up efforts to combat a growing issue affecting our waterways — illegal fishing and the theft of fish from private lakes and fisheries.

Working in close partnership with the Environment Agency and volunteer bailiffs from the Angling Trust, the team has been conducting proactive patrols across rivers, lakes, and private fisheries throughout the county.

The joint operation aims to deter and disrupt those who flout the law and disrespect our rural communities, by offering advice and guidance, or enforcement where necessary.

Why is this a problem?

• Illegal fishing undermines the efforts of responsible anglers who pay for valid rod licences and contribute to syndicates that manage and protect private waters

• Fish theft not only damages delicate aquatic ecosystems but also drives up the costs for legitimate anglers and syndicate members who invest in maintaining healthy fish stocks

• These crimes can often go together with other rural offences, including criminal damage and anti-social behaviour.

Rural Crime officer, PC Robert Bloxham, said: “Rural crime comes in many guises including illegal fishing and fish theft which not only affects livelihoods but can also have a serious impact on the natural environment.

“Fishing without permission and the theft of fish are criminal offences and it is vital that we continue to work alongside the Environment Agency and the Angling Trust to tackle these issues and send a warning that breaking the law will not be tolerated.

“Anyone fishing in England must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence, but more importantly, must ensure that they carry it with them otherwise they could face prosecution and have their equipment seized.

“We would encourage everyone to help us protect our waterways by supporting responsible angling, which will in turn keep Northamptonshire’s countryside safe and sustainable for all.”

Fishing without a licence also carries a potential fine of up to £2,500. For information about how to obtain a licence, visit https://orlo.uk/TCFBM

Matt Breathwick, Fisheries Enforcement Officer with the Environment Agency for Lincolnshire & Northamptonshire, added: “Our area fisheries enforcement officers are available to respond to calls every day as well as carry out on patrols visiting fisheries across the county. Don’t wait until the following day to report issues, please report it straight away.

“Illegal fishing and rod licence evasion undermine the integrity of our enforcement efforts and divert vital resources away from habitat protection and fishery improvements. Together, we can safeguard our fisheries, support sustainable angling, and ensure our waters remain healthy and vibrant for generations to come."

Anyone with any concerns about people fishing illegally in the county’s waterways is asked to report it online at https://orlo.uk/4aXbw or call Northamptonshire Police on 101.

Alternatively, you can call the Environment Agency incident hotline on 0800 807060, which is manned 24/7 all year round.

Always call 999 in the event of an emergency, such as a crime in progress or where life is at risk.
