This time next week we will be in full preparation for celebrating our first birthday, we are doing it in style.
We have Gav Spencer belting out the clasics, a delicious lunch and refreshments. Along with a big splash of fun.
In our first year we have doubled our staff members and the days we open, we deliver our club to over 100 people attending our sessions a month.
Two of our staff members have won awards which was an amazing achievement.
We couldn’t do this without the support of the venues will deliver the clubs from either.

Please join us and help us celebrate 🌈

🌟 What a fantastic start to our online dementia support course today! 🌟

Today we explored two topics that can completely change the way we understand and respond to dementia.

🧠 Understanding the neuroscience of dementia

We looked beyond the myths and misconceptions to understand how different memory systems are affected by dementia.

For example:

❓ "Why can my loved one remember the argument we had yesterday but not the note I left on the kitchen table?"

This often relates to different memory systems in the brain. Episodic memory (remembering recent events and new information) is commonly affected early in dementia, whilst autobiographical memory (memories linked to personal experiences and emotions) can remain stronger for much longer.

We also discussed why some people may still be able to carry out well-practised activities, such as driving familiar routes, making a cup of tea, or playing an instrument. These skills are often supported by procedural memory, which can remain relatively preserved despite other cognitive changes.

Understanding the brain helps us move away from assumptions such as "they're not trying" or "they're being difficult" and towards greater compassion, confidence and connection.

💙 Exploring guilt

We then had an honest discussion about guilt – one of the most common emotions experienced by people supporting someone living with dementia.

We explored:

▪️ Why guilt develops
▪️ The unrealistic expectations many people place on themselves
▪️ How guilt can affect wellbeing, decision-making and relationships
▪️ The difference between healthy reflection and unhelpful self-blame
▪️ How to take a more balanced and compassionate view of ourselves

Many people are carrying far more responsibility than they ever imagined, often whilst juggling work, family, finances and their own health. Guilt rarely makes us better supporters but, understanding it can help us care more effectively and sustainably.

Thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to such thoughtful discussions. I am already looking forward to next week's session.

📢 Both of our current dementia support courses are now fully booked.

The response has been incredible, highlighting just how much need there is for evidence-based education, emotional support and a safe space to talk openly about the realities of supporting someone living with dementia.

If you would be interested in joining a future course, please get in touch. I'd be happy to add you to the waiting list and keep you updated about upcoming dates.

What a fantastic day we had yesterday at Dementia Club & Grub! 🎉

Alongside our usual bingo, quizzes and great company, we were treated to some truly incredible music.

A huge thank you to the exceptionally talented Steve Fearn for his extraordinary voice and guitar playing, and to Mike Dando for his wonderful piano performance. The music quiz was a real highlight and had everyone singing along, laughing and joining in.

We also enjoyed Gareth Morris creative games—perhaps a little crazy at times—but they certainly kept us entertained and brought plenty of smiles to the room!

One of my personal highlights was Steve Fearn performing a song he had written about me. It was completely unexpected, incredibly thoughtful, and something I will never forget. Thank you, Steve.

A special thank you to Philip Ferguson and the team at The Overstone Arms Pub and Dining for the delicious food, warm hospitality and ongoing support in helping make Dementia Club & Grub such a success.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who came along and made the afternoon so special. Seeing people living with dementia, family members, friends and supporters enjoying themselves together is exactly what Club & Grub is all about.

We can't wait to do it all again next month! ❤️
