This week marks the start of Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK Drowning Prevention Week.

The Norfolk Water Safety Forum supports this important campaign, which aims to educate communities - particularly young people aged 5 to 17 - on vital water safety skills ahead of the school holidays.

As part of the week, we’re working alongside Alive Leisure Centres’ swim teachers to support free water safety sessions for 8–15 year olds. We’re also taking part in water safety training with the Fenland Working Newfoundlands Group.

We’re encouraging parents, guardians, schools, youth groups and children’s clubs to share these life-saving tips to help keep young people safe:
📞 If you see someone in difficulty, call 999 - never enter the water after them
💧 If you get into trouble, lie on your back in a star shape and float to live
🦺 Always wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid when on the water or taking part in water sports
🤝 Swim with others and let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back
🧊 Ease yourself into the water - cold water shock can happen quickly
