Yesterday the girls returned to league action after 2 weeks of no fixtures and visited Hessle Ravens.

The game started off really open, end to end with both teams creating chances but it was Hessle who capitalised first and shortly after added a second. Hessle took a grip of the game and credit to them their movement was a lot sharper and they looked very comfortable in possession.

Half time came and gave us a chance to highlight and change a few things and the Gems came out and settled quickly, but just couldn’t get the ball in the net. Maisie came the closest after a great little link up with Holly which saw her strike hit the post. Marlie and Holly were restricted to strikes from distance and as the Gems looked to push on it was Belle between the sticks that really kept the game in sight for the Gems pulling off some fantastic saves!! Unfortunately though as the Gems continued to push it was Hessle who put the game to bed with a further 2 goals and saw the game out finishing 4-0.

Credit to Hessle who capitalised and asked more questions then we had answers for and shows how close the league will be this season 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Kingswood United Gems v Malet Today.

Another game where injuries hampered the girls and lots of reshuffling was needed again proving what a benefit it is to have children who are confident and able to play in multiple positions.

The first half from the gems saw a lot of probing but just lacked that little bit of composure with the final pass or finish. After 20 minutes we saw 3 of our senior players within the team all sat on the bench receiving treatment and a reshuffle to a 4-4-2. When 3 big players leave the pitch early you look to the others to step up and that’s what they did today, voices where heard from our youngest players (we have 3 that play a year up and are almost 2 years younger then some of the girls!) We had leaders all over the pitch which is exactly what we ask for👏🏻👏🏻.

Half time came with a score of 0-0 and the girls looked like they had settled and started to dominate the game. We spoke about controlling the game and saving legs, playing the short game and moving the ball quicker. The girls started the second half and settled quickly and looked dangerous every time they had the ball. In the 49th minute they got their rewards, a move started by Belle in goal when cutting out a cross, her quick thinking set us off on the counter attack. A pass to Jess Hoff, at RB who inturn played into to Lucy in the centre circle who stoked the ball first time into the path of Maisie steaming down the right wing. Maisie took 1 touch then unleashed a rocket which beat the keeper only to hit the underside of the bar, but like all good centre forwards Marlie had followed in to ensure she capitalised and got the team the goal that the move deserved. 20secs to play through the 3rds, 5 players, 8 touches of the ball, plus an assist from the crossbar.

All was looking comfortable until the 70th minute which instigated the craziest 4 minutes of football I’ve probably ever seen!! An off the ball trip in retaliation to a late tackle, saw a red card issued to Holly. From the resulting free kick saw a deflection off one of our girls heads which put the ball into the roof of the net and out of Belles reach 1-1. From the restart we played out down the right wing where this time Izzy and Marlie combined well with a resulting cross from Marlie taking a huge deflection off a Malet defender and nestling into the near post. 2 minutes later and the Gems ensured they’d take 3 points for all their endeavours today, again it was Belle this time going straight down the Middle of the pitch picking out Bridie who swivelled and played into Marlie who likewise did the same to send Maisie racing clear. This time a low drive by Maisie found the bottom corner keeping her fine start to the season going 3 from 3 for our non stop number 14🙌🏻.

Today would of been so easy for the Gems to feel sorry for themselves and look to blame injuries shortage of players or even a red card as an excuse to not turn up and play. When odds are against you and big players are injured then it’s your turn to step up and shine.. every single one of them did that today🧡🖤

Coaches player of the game went to the full team,
Belle, Lydia, Emily, Harriet, Katie, Lucy, Abi, Jess, Izzy, Marlie and Maisie. With Cameos from the injured Jess, Bridie and Holly, although something tells me Holly will now regret not keeping the ice pack on her knee and staying on the bench 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣.

Parents Player went to Katie who impressed last week at left back when Emily limped out of the game and today with Emily covering Jess at Centre Back she produced another relentless performance and I believe one player was that impressed she even tried swapping shirts with her during the game 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.

ERGFL U16 League Cup
v Bilton FC

Photos from Kingswood United Gems's post 16/09/2023

The Gems hosted Bilton FC in their U16 Cup Game and a 12noon KO. With a nervous start and a few early injuries a lot of shuffling was in order and the girls took a while to settle and get their foot on the ball.

When they did lift their heads they linked up nicely and created a few opportunities from distance, both keepers where exceptional today the “Mary Earps” effect ⚽️🙌🏻

The Gems broke the deadlock when Lucy linked up with Maisie for her initial shot to hit the post then bounce very kindly back towards her to calmly finish first time with her left foot👏🏻👏🏻. Bilton kept pushing and and a long ball over top resulted in a bit of a mix up and an own goal.. half time 1-1… a few laughs, a reminder what a positive player looks like and the girls where back out ready to go.

Belle in goal for the Gems set the tone for the second half, confident and secure in possession great distribution and this then spread through the defence. Lydia, Katie, Jess, Harriet and Jess all looked composed when rotating and gave us the platform to build from. Holly, Hutch, Abi, Izzy and Bridie worked hard across the middle of the pitch creating chances and getting shots away. Today we switched between a 442 and 433 and the forwards never stopped chasing, be that Maisie, Marlie or Lucy with another great cameo role from Lucy dropping deep and picking out some great through balls to really stretch the Bilton defence 💪🏼.

Football is a game of opportunities and today we defended well, limited theirs and took ours with Lucy and Bridie securing the victory through shear persistence and willing to run the distance ⚽️👊🏻 Hard work pays off.

The Kingswood United Gems travelled to Malet Lambert today with a slightly later kick off time at 11am.

With a couple of late withdrawals from the team due to illness we had a bit of a reshuffle and welcomed back Jess after she was given the green light to play, after having had a splint on her wrist for the previous weeks.

The message today was work hard and pick your pass and wow did the girls do that! The first 40 minutes the gems where clinical from Belle in goal, the defence of Lydia, Jess, Harriet and Emily, Midfield 3 of Hutch, Holly and Katie( Jess K). All of them provided the security and foundation which provided a first halve flurry of goals , a hat-trick each for Lucy and Millie with a well deserved goal for Maisie to round off a solid first half performance. For all of Malets endeavours and drive to play forwards the Gems didn’t give them an inch.

Half-time team talk was about maintaining the clean sheet having that same passion to defend as a team as they’d shown in the first half to score goals. With the girls carrying a couple of sore legs and injuries we knew it was going to be hard to match the intensity that the girls showed in the first half and Malet was keen to get back into the game and similar to last week threw it all at us from the kick off. Once again though Belle stood firm and produced some great saves as Malet looked to shoot at every opportunity. We again shuffled our girls around and looked to play through the pressure, but found it difficult to convert with some great saves coming from the Malet keeper and even the crossbar denying Millie her 4th goal as she looked certain to score with her head from a Lucy corner. It was the same combination that eventually saw Millie score her 4th another corner whipped in which this time Millie met on on the volley.

The objective was to not concede the second half and yes the girls could of scored more goals I’m sure but all in all it was a very measured and complete performance today. 3 league games left and a cup final. The leagues set for a very close run in ⚽️

Well done to Belle and Lucy today, coaches and parents players of the match 🏆🏆

Everyone of the girls put a massive performance in today 🤜🏻⚽️🧡

Also a shout out to Abi who smashed her trampoline competition today 🥇🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
