Where it all started I won’t forget what this kid did at our club and has gone on to create his own venture and we boxed together at St Paul’s but what a top coach he’s ended up and will be forever grateful for his time at East Hull boxing academy he cornered Charan’s first fight top man paul Croll

East Hull Community Hub Celebrates Nearly Two Decades of Transforming Young Lives Through Boxing

East Hull Community Hub proudly highlights the significant community impact of its voluntary boxing programme, led for 19 years by dedicated coach Sean Ross. Operating from St Bede’s Church, Hull (HU9 4SJ), the club welcomes between 40–70 young people each evening — supporting around 280 young people per week and delivering more than 275,000 positive youth engagements since opening.

The programme provides structured sport, individual mentoring and a safe, stable environment for young people aged 7–19, many of whom come from large families, deprived backgrounds or limited-access households. Through discipline, encouragement and consistent role modelling, the club helps young people build confidence, resilience, fitness and ambition.

Alongside nightly coaching, Sean contributes a further three hours each week to essential administration, fundraising and match-making, ensuring the club remains sustainable and accessible to all families who rely on it.

Over nearly two decades, the club has supported young people into the police, fire service, Royal Marines, and university degrees in sports and education. It has also helped those seeking employment but lacking confidence to attend interviews — placing them on coaching courses that enabled them to rebuild self-belief through teaching others. One former volunteer has since founded a successful boxing club elsewhere in Hull, now thriving for its tenth year, demonstrating the long-term, generational impact of the Hub’s work.

A spokesperson for East Hull Community Hub said:
“This club has become a lifeline for young people across East Hull. Sean’s voluntary commitment has created a safe, structured and inspiring environment where young people can grow, thrive and find their path.”

Sean Ross, Lead Coach, added:
“Every young person deserves a chance. Boxing is our tool — but the real impact is confidence, belonging and opportunity. Seeing our young people succeed is why we never give up.”

East Hull Community Hub continues to work closely with schools, councillors and youth services to expand opportunities, strengthen community wellbeing and support the next generation of East Hull families.
