Today’s match report - 13.09.26

Hartshill 4-1 Manor old boys

It was a great start to the season for Hartshill. With a well deserved victory. In fact, without the Manor goalkeeper, it really could have been double figures. We were that good.

We took control from the first whistle. With Gilly and Graham pulling off good saves from the keeper while one on one. They had one breakaway, when we didn’t mark the free man, and his shot cannoned off the bar. (The keeper would have served it though 😉)
Our pressure finally paid dividends. Ball worked from right to left and Danny Gill free, and slotted past the keepers dive to his left.
We pushed forward and were quickly rewarded with a second goal from Graham. Again good movement down our right, and Graham moved off his left wing to squeeze it past the keeper at his near post.
No resting on our laurels at all, as our captain picked the ball up, and calmly slotted low to the keepers right.
We were proper on top, showing no sign of letting them back into the game…. Then a penalty given against us for big Andy’s long Geordie legs stepping in the area.
The player hits it low to Mickey's right, and despite a finger on the ball, it went in off the post. I couldn’t quite channel my inner David Raya.
Half time 3-1.

The second half was more cagey. Although they only had one true chance when through on the keeper, who was phenomenal in narrowing the angle and saving the shot 😉
Nige hit a thunderbolt from 20 yards that hit the bar with the keeper well beaten. Maybe he deserved that bit of luck, as he saved more one on ones from us.
Then with 5 minutes to go, we went to total football. Proper Dutch 1974. Everybody touched the ball and we kept it for a long time, passed and moved. The ball fell to Harry with the keeper to beat. Sat him down and rolled the ball in. 4-1 and game over.

Really strong performance.
*Didn’t get called for running once*

Everyone played their part.
Andy Patel bosses the centre of midfield.
Graham, Harry and Rich offered us dynamic options from the wings.
Gilly stayed up top.
Andy Murdoch was solid at the back.
Nige Campbell man of the match for an assured defensive performance.

Friday 11th September

Hartshill 3 Nomads 0
Hartshill 1 Abbeymead 3
Hartshill 1 B’ham Whites 3

For me as WFA league secretary and my first session since my appointment a remarkable day at Rushall and a win for walking football as a scratch team was put together at the last moment after a withdrawal the day before.
The scratch team make-up was largely from Rushall but also included a donor player from Hartshill which naturally weakened our own squad.

It was fantastic to welcome back John Gill into the fold. The intent of introducing John as a tactical substitute had gone out of the window however due to the Nomads formation, reducing the 7 man squad to the core 6.

Our first game was against Nomads, who surprised us by dominating the game against a sleeping Hartshill for the first 10 minutes, and kept Dave Seddon very busy.
Stevie Arnold’s persistence won through however. After a strong tackle against him just outside the area he maintained possession whilst the defender stumbled, went past him and slotted home. A relieved Hartshill re-grouped at half time and the second half went far better and had the addition of a tremendous strike from Steve Nicholls following a free kick and a mazy run from Stevie Arnold mesmerising a defender and coolly striking it past a bemused goalie.3-0 victory.

Each game then followed the theme of 2 halves. Abbeymead provided the sternest test with them racing to a 2-0 lead with well taken goals and finishing the first half 3-0. Another regroup and in the second half an Arnold poached goal, a late blue card on Nico , final score 3-1.

The third and final game was against the old enemy of Birmingham Whites. Despite commanding the game in the first half mistakes led us to being 2-0 by half time and then a third second half before another thunderbolt from distance from Nico helped recover some normality to 1-3.

Unusual performances for Hartshill given our reputation of being the defence meanies of the league. In retrospect understandable given the circumstances.

The Nomads went on to draw and win their other 2 games. Post match there was great debate between managers about their results standing which in the end was agreed especially since Stourport Swifts had committed to providing back up players for future sessions.
Well done all and a special thanks to our team supporting the league including Martin Willetts and John Green who shared our player contribution to Nomads in a sporting manner.

Our women's section had a great event welcoming Tamworth to join us today. Firstly at 11am we played a strict league rules friendly....honours even at 1-1 .. it helped sharpen both teams knowledge of the new four team running offences ..then a pen award ..yes Hartshill gave a pen away under that rule 🥴
Then we had our Mosh Pit, Powerplay Tournament where we all mixed up into four teams and played each other. Massive thanks to Pete Groves and Lesley Groves for sideline operations ...keeping game times, results , blasting the horn and playing the head banging music in the last three minutes of every game where any goal scored counted as double. The Breakaway Bruisers topped the table but all were winners today .. also a massive thanks to Carol Watts and Kirsten for being our pitch officials today .
A great few hours of footy enjoyed by all 🎉🎉🎉
