Today, at 82 years young, our wonderful friend Charlie Macari jumped out of an aeroplane at 10,000 feet, all to raise money for Daniella Peebles and her family.

To say we are proud of Charlie simply doesn’t come close.

What he has done is brave, selfless and genuinely inspirational. Charlie took on something most of us would think twice about at any age, simply because he wanted to do something meaningful to help a young girl and her family facing an unimaginably difficult battle.

Charlie, you are a very special human being. 💙

Everyone at Kinross is incredibly proud of you, and I’m personally very proud to call you my friend.

As Masters week arrives once again, I find myself reflecting on what is, for me, one of the most powerful images ever captured at Augusta National. Rory McIlroy, down on his knees, overcome not just by victory, but by everything it took to get there.

It wasn’t just about winning a green jacket. It was about perseverance. About coming back, time and again, to a place that had tested him so deeply. About embracing the pressure rather than being defined by it.

As the world turns its eyes once more to The Masters Tournament, it’s a timely reminder of why we love this game. Not for perfection, but for the pursuit of it. Not for the easy victories; but for the hard-earned ones that mean everything.

I n s t r u c t i o n | the first move

The phrase “one-piece takeaway” has been repeated in golf instruction for decades, yet from a biomechanical perspective it is arguably one of the more misleading pieces of guidance to have entered mainstream coaching language over the past half-century.

The expression implies that the club, arms, and shoulders should begin the backswing as a single rigid unit. While this concept may have been intended to discourage excessive hand manipulation, it fails to reflect the fundamental geometry and kinematics of the golf swing.

In reality, the golf swing is composed of multiple segments moving along arcs of different radii. The clubhead travels on the largest and longest arc, the lead hand on a smaller arc, and the lead shoulder on a smaller arc still. Because objects travelling on larger radii must cover greater distance to arrive at the same point in time, they must move earlier and at greater linear velocity than segments travelling on smaller radii.

Therefore, if the objective of a well-sequenced backswing is for the clubhead, hands, arms, and shoulders to arrive near the top of the swing at roughly the same moment, each reaching the end of its functional range, then the motion cannot realistically occur as a perfectly unified “one piece” movement. Instead, the geometry of the system requires subtle differential motion: the clubhead must begin moving first and travel faster than the lead hand, and the lead hand must begin moving earlier and travel faster than the lead shoulder.

A more precise understanding acknowledges that synchronisation in the backswing is achieved not through identical movement of each segment, but through correctly proportioned motion dictated by the relative arc lengths of the clubhead, hands, and shoulders.

The biggest problem that well-meaning golfers will face this winter is this…

When playing from a mat, a 1-2 inch fat shot will often feel better than the desired ball-turf interaction. It may even go higher and farther too.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐭

When you strike an iron correctly from grass, the lowest point of your swing arc occurs after the golf ball.

That means…
• Club contacts the ball first
• Then the turf
• Producing a downward strike
• Creating compression

This is what allows the grooves to grip the ball, reduce dynamic loft, and produce a lower-launching flight with predictable spin, none of which is achievable if the shot is heavy.

Ground-first contact on a mat, however…
• The club bounces off the surface
• Retains speed through impact
• Slides into the ball
• Launching it higher with less spin

In many cases, the strike that was technically incorrect (ground-first) is rewarded with a functional, more impressive ball flight.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦

Your brain does not know what is technically correct. It learns, “That movement produced a good result.”

So after hundreds of winter balls…
• Low point drifts backwards
• Angle of attack shallows
• Dynamic loft increases
• Compression disappears

Come spring, playing from real turf…
• Contact feels heavy
• Distance control suffers
• Strike pattern becomes inconsistent
• Divots start behind the ball

And the golfer is left wondering why their "winter practice" didn’t translate.

So be mindful; mat feedback can be deceptive, and without monitoring strike you may be training a movement that won’t translate to real turf in the spring.

P u t t i n g | green speeds

One of the most common requests we hear from golfers is for the greens to be quicker. It’s completely understandable; fast greens are often associated with Tour conditions, elite venues and championship golf.

But the reality is this:

Amateur golfers perform better on slightly slower greens. And here is why…

𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫

On faster greens (~10.5 Stimpmeter), a putt started just 1° offline will miss by…

~ 1.5” at 6ft on slow/medium greens.
~ 3” at 6ft on faster greens.

Most amateurs already struggle to start the ball on line and faster greens punish this immediately

𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝

Faster greens…
• Increase total break
• Add late-stage curvature
• Make double-breakers more influential

The sweet spot for most club golfers is 8.5 – 9.5 on the Stimpmeter, this provides…

• True roll
• Forgiveness on strike and pace
• More made putts from 6–10 feet

This is why at Kinross we do not chase ultra-fast "Tour speeds", because what looks impressive often produces worse scoring, slower rounds and less enjoyment for the majority of amateur players.
