Pilates or Yoga… what’s the difference?
There’s a big trend for Pilates at the moment, but what is the difference between Yoga and Pilates?
There are both lots of similarities and also many differences. Both can help us feel stronger, move more flexibly and become more aware of our bodies, but both have different foundations and intentions.
Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates and uses precise, controlled movements to build strength and stability, with a particular focus on the core and posture. It can be practised on a mat or with equipment such as the Reformer.
Yoga has been practised for thousands of years and has its roots in ancient India. The physical postures help us develop strength, flexibility, and balance - in fact, they were originally developed as a means to be able to sit comfortably in meditation for long periods of time. Yoga also works with the mind and spirit, tackling the stress of daily life by quietening the mind with breathing techniques. That quiet part of the practice is just as valuable as the movement.
Your body might need a strong, flowing practice, a few simple stretches, a long-held pose, or ten quiet minutes lying on the mat - or all of the above! There’s no need for every practice to be impressive or energetic to be worthwhile. Yoga is never competitive - recognising that each body is unique, requiring different things at different times - irrespective of age or ability.
We look forward to seeing you on the mat for what your body or mind is calling for this week. Follow the link in bio or visit Stableyoga.co.uk for our schedule of ten classes a week.
