🏆 WESTMORLAND SENIOR CUP

Storeys 0–4 KLAFC

Kirkby progressed to the next round of the Westmorland Senior Cup with a comfortable 4–0 win over Lancaster outfit Storeys, despite a fairly lacklustre performance in a very stop-start game.

Goals from Wozny, Armstrong, Wharton and Taylor sealed the victory and, just as importantly, Kirkby somehow managed to come through the afternoon injury-free — a welcome bonus.

The pick of the players were Midwinter, Twiname and Wozny, with Wozny just edging Man of the Match after a well-taken goal and a tireless display throughout.

Not Kirkby’s best performance, but job done and safely into the next round.

⚽️ KIRKBY LONSDALE RESERVES – LATEST RESULTS 🔵⚪️

From the results above, the lads have put together some fantastic performances, including big wins against Storeys of Lancaster A, Cartmel & District Reserves and NJC FC Dynamos, as well as a hard-fought penalty shootout victory.

Most recently, a 3–2 win over Eden Valley keeps the momentum going! 💪⚽️

Kirkby Stephen 1–2 Kirkby Lonsdale AFC

KL travelled to the Upper Eden Valley for the Kirkby Classico, facing off against a youthful Kirkby Stephen side.

The same certainly couldn’t be said of the KL squad, who were proudly boasting a quartet of 40-plus players amongst their ranks!

KL started brightly and thought they had taken the lead when wonderkid Hunter rifled a superb half-volley into the top corner, only for the flag to go up for offside.

Taylor, filling in at left-back, then had a glorious opportunity from five yards but somehow managed to sky his effort over the bar.

A minute later, KL were made to pay. The home side beat the offside trap before squaring the ball across goal for a KS player to sweep home and make it 1–0.

Their lead lasted less than two minutes. Wharton was hauled down in the box and picked himself up to confidently fire the resulting spot kick home.

Hunter forced the young KS keeper into another smart save as the sides went in level at the break.

The second half started scrappily, with neither side managing to find much rhythm.

Wharton again tested the keeper before Hunter fired over from close range when it looked as though he had done all the hard work with an excellent first touch.

Wharton was then withdrawn through injury, with veteran striker Rogerson entering proceedings.

And it was Rogerson who proved to be the match winner, reacting quickest to a loose ball and firing KL into a 2–1 lead.

KL had to withstand some late pressure from a willing Kirkby Stephen side who never gave up the fight, but the visitors held firm to claim all three points.

Huge credit must go to the centre-back pairing of the vastly experienced Hermida and Foster, while full-back Holt somehow battled through the final 20 minutes on virtually one leg.

Man of the Match went to reserve, reserve, stand-in captain Armstrong, who produced a superb display, closely followed by Wozny in the heart of midfield.

KIRKBY LONSDALE AFC 2–2 WINDERMERE

In the midweek fixture, Kirkby faced off against familiar foes Windermere in what has proved to be an evenly matched contest in recent meetings.

Kirkby started brightly, taking the lead inside 10 minutes when Fearn rattled a left-footed strike in off the inside of the post to give the hosts the perfect start.

This did little to deter Windermere, who were seeing plenty of the ball and beginning to cause problems down Kirkby’s left side.

Kirkby almost doubled their advantage when Metcalfe was sent clear on the counter, but rather than taking the chance early he cut back inside and the opportunity was gone.

He learned from his mistake soon after.

Put through again, this time by Fearn, Metcalfe kept his composure and lifted the ball over the advancing keeper to make it 2–0.

Again, Windermere weren’t deterred and continued to enjoy plenty of possession. They got their reward on the stroke of half-time when a cross caught out the Kirkby back line and was swept home to halve the deficit.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Windermere dominating possession while Kirkby looked dangerous on the counter.

With 10 minutes remaining, the visitors grabbed a deserved equaliser. Another ball into the Kirkby box caused problems and was eventually poked home from close range to level the scores at 2–2.

That finally stirred Kirkby back into life and suddenly it was Windermere’s turn to sit back, with Twiname making some dangerous runs down the left channel as the hosts went looking for a winner.

A couple of half-chances came and went before the referee blew for full-time, and on reflection both sides probably felt a draw was a fair result.

It was Kirkby’s first dropped points of the season, but the unbeaten run remains intact as they move on to Saturday’s fixture, with the last of the early-season midweek games now out of the way.

MOM went to Fearn, who was at the heart of most of Kirkby’s best attacking play, scoring the opener and creating the second.

Also a big mention for stand-in keeper Nicholson, who stepped up and donned the gloves in Rowsell’s absence.

Kirkby Lonsdale AFC 5–0 Wetheriggs

Kirkby hosted last year’s champions Wetheriggs, who had bagged nine goals in their midweek fixture, expecting their toughest test of the season so far.

Although an obviously depleted Riggs outfit warmed up, what followed was completely unexpected.

After a fairly even start, Kirkby began to assert themselves with their passing football. The opener came when Carter-Brown timed his run to perfection and, with only the keeper to beat, saw his shot come back off the post before crossing the line. Fair play to the Wetheriggs linesman, who confirmed the ball had clearly gone in.

The second wasn’t long in coming. An almost identical scenario saw Carter-Brown’s effort strike the post, only for the hungry Wharton to rush in and slam home from a yard out.

Two soon became three when Fearn rounded off a great passage of play with a cool-as-you-like finish.

Kirkby were rampant at this point, with Wharton having two further golden opportunities to add to his tally — one thwarted by an excellent save and the other wasted.

The half-time whistle gave a shell-shocked Riggs side a chance to regroup.

The expected second-half onslaught from the visitors never really materialised, though, and with Kirkby introducing the fresh legs of Hunter, Nicholson and Taylor, it was the home side who continued to push forward.

The goal of the game came when Carter-Brown was again superbly put through one-on-one with the keeper, but this time he produced a delightful d**k over his head and into the net.

Things went from bad to worse for Riggs when they were reduced to 10 men following a bit of handbags.

Fearn, who was a handful all afternoon, will have been disappointed not to add to his tally after spurning three great opportunities to increase the lead ,but is already forming a great Batman and Robin partnership with Wharton .

The pacey Hunter and the experienced Taylor then forced two smart saves from the Riggs keeper before Carter-Brown rounded off his Man of the Match performance — and completed his hat-trick — with a superb 20-yard free kick.

Although the forwards will rightly take plenty of the plaudits, huge credit must go to Kirkby’s back four and midfield three, who laid the foundations for an outstanding team performance and a thoroughly deserved clean sheet.

A tough day at the office for the Penrith outfit, who will no doubt regroup and come back with a vengeance in their upcoming fixtures.

Cartmel AFC 2–3 Kirkby Lonsdale AFC

Kirkby travelled to Allithwaite looking to avenge last season’s dramatic defeat, when Cartmel somehow grabbed all three points with two injury-time goals to win 3–2.

Things couldn’t have started much worse for Kirkby, as they found themselves behind inside the opening couple of minutes. A headed free kick could only be parried by Rowsell and the Cartmel number 6 reacted quickest to poke home from close range.

The early setback seemed to kickstart Kirkby into life and they began moving the ball smartly on a decent surface. Fearn almost caught the keeper out after spotting him off his line, but his effort drifted narrowly wide.

Holt was finding plenty of space down the left and causing problems, while Hunter went close on a couple of occasions, but Kirkby couldn’t find the breakthrough before the interval.

The second half started scrappily, with neither side really able to take control. A slight reshuffle soon proved beneficial for Kirkby and Fearn went close from a corner.

It didn’t matter, as minutes later Holmes grabbed the equaliser, meeting a gorgeous Carter-Brown corner to make it 1–1.

Holmes should have had a brace shortly afterwards when another excellent Carter-Brown delivery found him just two yards out, but somehow his header went over.

Kirkby were now on top and it was Fearn who fired them in front, smashing home after Holt’s cross took a deflection and dropped kindly into his path.

The third followed shortly afterwards. Wharton pounced on a defensive mix-up and, spotting the keeper stranded, produced a superb chip from 25 yards to put Kirkby 3–1 up.

Armstrong went close with a free kick and Kirkby had further opportunities to put the game beyond doubt, but couldn’t take them.

With Cartmel now throwing four men forward, Kirkby stopped playing the football that had put them in control and began inviting pressure onto themselves.

Cartmel got their reward with ten minutes remaining when an excellent free kick was whipped into the top corner to make it 3–2 and set up a nervy finish.

With Cartmel launching the ball into the box at every opportunity, Kirkby had to dig deep. The defence stood strong under sustained pressure and saw out the remaining minutes to secure a deserved three points — reversing last season’s 3–2 scoreline in the process.

A good away win, showing plenty of character after falling behind so early.

Kirkby Lonsdale Reserves 7–2 NJC

Wednesday evening saw us take on NJC at Lunefield Park, and what a start it was.

Possibly the fastest goal in Kirkby’s history came after just 26 seconds, with Phil Wozny finishing off a great assist from Mark Rogerson. Barely two minutes later, we struck again as Robbie Wharton pounced on an NJC defensive error to make it 2–0 inside the opening stages.

NJC responded with a goal of their own, but Kirkby quickly reasserted control. A superb through ball from Billy McGhee released Jordan Carter-Brown, who powered home to restore the two-goal cushion.

Phil Wozny then added his second of the night, making it 4–1.

NJC pulled another goal back, but Kirkby’s response was immediate. Captain Mark Rogerson got on the scoresheet to round off a dominant first-half display at 5–2.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Kirkby in control and creating chance after chance.

Further goals came from Dave Cowperthwaite and Harley Hunter, both set up by the influential Jamie Lowe, to complete the scoring.

While the forwards took the headlines, the Man of the Match went to Jack Leather, who delivered a superb defensive performance throughout. A fully deserved award.

A great result, but attention now turns quickly to Saturday and an important fixture against Lunesdale.
