The final shared track session of this campaign and a great start to the weekend...pb's were felled, sweat and perspiration (ladies) was shed and a bumper crop of food donations was collected for which I say thank you on behalf of Holy Cross Foodbank and Soup Kitchen.

It was great to have BFR joining us on the track sessions and new friendships have been made.

A massive thank you to Hampson & Mealey who kindly sponsored these sessions, fingers crossed future sponsorship will follow too once more permit these track nights in 2027...
Massive round of applause to all those that have taken part or contributed throughout the season...๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ”ฆ Member Spotlight - David Taylor (Aka Dave, DT) ๐Ÿ”ฆ

We caught up with Dave, our race Director, following a successful Wesham Summer 10k, Interclub and a cheeky win at the predictor race ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ† Current PBs
Parkrun - 16:44 - Southport - 2020
5k - 16:42 - Mid Cheshire 5k - 2020
5M - 28:03 - Thornton Interclub - 2022
10k - 35:32 - Podium 10k - 2022
10M - 59:18 - Sweatshop 10 - 2017
Half Marathon - 1:18:54 - Four Villages Half Marathon - 2020
Marathon - 2:48:29 - London Marathon - 2021

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ Joining Wesham
Dave joined Wesham back in May 2014, after dipping his toes into the running world with the Preston 10k the year before. As he entered more 10ks and parkruns, he quickly realised how strong the local club scene was - and Wesham soon became the obvious choice. The rest, as they say, is history.

๐Ÿค Favourite Events
Team events are where Dave truly comes alive.
-Interclubs - the atmosphere, the camaraderie, the sea of blue vests ๐Ÿฉต
-Cross Country - mud, grit, and proper team spirit
Heโ€™s also run the London Marathon three times, each one an unforgettable experience.
And in recent years? A surprising twist - theme park races have become a regular feature ๐ŸŽข๐Ÿ˜„ Rollercoasters and racingโ€ฆ why not?

๐Ÿ Preferred Distance
The 10k is Daveโ€™s sweet spot - that perfect blend of speed and endurance.
Although right now heโ€™s been racing shorter distancesโ€ฆ with the small exception of casually taking on the Snowdon Marathon last year ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

๐ŸŒณ parkrun Adventures
Saturday isnโ€™t Saturday - itโ€™s parkrunday.
Preston is technically his home event, but heโ€™s rarely there. Instead, Dave has run well over 100 different parkruns, exploring courses all over the country.
His standout favourite? Fountains Abbey โ€” stunning, atmospheric, and one of the most impressive parkrun settings youโ€™ll find โœจ
๐Ÿ” Why He Keeps Going Back
Simple: the joy of exploring new courses, the community feel, and the weekly ritual that every runner secretly loves.

๐ŸŽค Race Director Role
Dave stepped into the Race Director role in 2022, and itโ€™s been incredibly rewarding.
He loves seeing everything come together - but heโ€™s quick to point out that most runners never see the mountain of behindโ€‘theโ€‘scenes work that makes a race possible.
Planning, permits, logistics, marshals, safetyโ€ฆ itโ€™s a huge job, and he handles it brilliantly ๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŽ‰ Why the Wesham 10k Works
Two things make the Wesham 10k special:
The marshals - supportive, loud, encouraging, and everywhere you need them ๐Ÿ™Œ ๐Ÿ”Š
The course - fast enough for PB chasers, friendly enough for firstโ€‘timers.
That balance keeps runners returning year after year.

๐Ÿ’™ Why Wesham Is the Best
Dave loves running for Wesham - especially now, with so many new members bringing fresh energy.
The only downside? With all the new talent flying through the ranks, he jokes heโ€™ll need to start running faster if he wants to keep counting for the Interclub team ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ’จ

๐Ÿฅ‡ Predictor Race Win
A huge congratulations to Dave - only 3 seconds out in the Predictor Race taking the joint win with John Collier ๐Ÿ†
His secret?
โ€œBeing honest โ€” I knew what Lee Nixon had predicted and knew he was racing it, so I judged my pace off what he was doing!โ€
A tactical masterclass. No spreadsheets. No algorithms. Justโ€ฆ Lee (hope youโ€™ve claimed a share of the winnings Lee) ๐Ÿ˜„

For anyone interested, the Dave Waywell Wesham 10k is back on Saturday 28th November at 10amโ€ฆ entries now open:

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ† Handicap Race ๐Ÿ† ๐Ÿ

Back in October 2025 the latest handicap season beganโ€ฆ
12 monthly runs - 6 winter handicaps ๐Ÿฅถ and 6 summer handicaps ๐Ÿฅต - came down to one final race for the line!

To qualify our members must have done 2 winter fixtures and 2 summer fixturesโ€ฆ and put in a bit of effort (no one likes a player ๐Ÿคฃ)

On Monday we really said goodbye to the summer fixtures in torrential rain and a strong breeze โ˜”๏ธ but that didnโ€™t stop our runners!
The results are in:

Ladies ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ
๐Ÿฅ‡ Lucy Smethurst ๐Ÿ†
๐Ÿฅˆ Cathryn Parkinson
๐Ÿฅ‰ Natalie Westgate

Men ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ
๐Ÿฅ‡ David Sharples ๐Ÿ†
๐Ÿฅˆ Martin Allison
๐Ÿฅ‰ Stuart Mulrooney

Well done to everyone who ran, including our winners Lucy and Dave.

Lucy ran her summer fixtures in 42:19, 45:06, 39:59, 45:03 and flew round the trophy race in 36:18 ๐Ÿ’ช

Dave ran his summer fixtures in 39:18, 40:00 and rounded off the trophy race with 35:04 ๐Ÿ’ช

A huge thank you to Emma Crabtree, Liz Beth, Tony Sharrocks, Michelle Rose, Bev Wilding and all our fantastic Marshalls for coordinating the events and keeping everyone safe - whatever the weather ๐ŸงŠโ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’จโ˜”๏ธ

This year has seen record numbers completing the races - and weโ€™d love to see everyone qualifying next year, giving it their all and making the trophy race extra exciting!

See you in October ๐Ÿฉต

We look forward to share the individual category winners when they are announced๐Ÿคž

A quick message from Nat and Adam ๐Ÿ’ญ
What an absolute honour to be captains of such a wonderful team of runners. When we became captains, we didnโ€™t have any particular aim of what we wanted to achieve. All we wanted to do was create an inclusive and enjoyable environment where people wanted to attend club events, were proud to represent Wesham Road Runners and had a platform to achieve their goals. I think from the year we have had we can safely say we have achieved that. The club is our family and we are so proud and thankful to all of you! The whole is much greater than the sum of its parts, so never underestimate your contribution and what it means to others ๐Ÿ’ฅ

The Blencathra Marathon
By Phil Swindells

On Sunday Lee Illingworth and I took ourselves off to the Northern Lakes for the Charm Bracelet Trail Events Blencathra Marathon. This was a full marathon distance event with 1790m (5875 ft) elevation, although it was definitely more than that! It started and finished in Caldbeck taking in five of the Northern Fells; Bowscale, Blencathra, Little Calva, Knott and High Pike. It was without doubt a very cheeky route but also a fantastic and very enjoyable one too. There were 88 starters for this well organised event.

It was a bit wet at the start but it soon cleared leaving mostly blue skies but strong winds and clag on the highest points of the route. Lee was coming back from injury so was unsure how his race would go. Ultimately he was really happy with how it unfolded coming in strongly in 23rd spot. I was able to keep somewhere near the pointy end of the race, finishing in 6th position. The ladies did brilliantly in this race with the first three finishing in 4th, 5th and 7th places overall. Superb stuff from them and great to see!

Great organisation from the Charm Bracelet team and the volunteers were brilliant! Hats off to the guy who was sat at the top of Blencathra in pretty dire conditions, ticking off the runners as they came through, proper dedication! Overall this was a fantastic event and both of us thoroughly enjoyed it.

Phil Swindells - 05:33:07 - 6th
Lee Ill - 06:14:00 - 23rd

(Oh and just to add, my mate Chris came 1st in a time of 04:49:46 ๐Ÿ˜ณ)
