Kirrie Sundays travelled up the A90 to Fettercairn where they faced off against a debuting side in Mearns Sundays. A team that has progressively gained steadiness since our last encounter in pre season.

The match started and Kirrie was on the back foot from the front. A strong wind would prove tough against the away side trying to play out from the back and Mearns took advantage to begin.

A few chances arrived for the hosts but the centre defensive partnership of Phillip and Reid did well to clear up and Milligan too with a few decent stops in between.

The deadlock however was broken around the twenty minute mark for Mearns. A ball won back from the middle was played out to the right. The winger crossed in and was met by the unchallenged man in the middle. 0-1.

Minutes later, Kirrie grabbed their equaliser. A catch from a set piece by Milligan, rolled the ball out wide to Smith who lobbed over to Mitchell to run on and finish over the goalkeeper. Three passes. 1-1.

Time went on throughout the half and Kirrie won a free kick on the edge of the box around five minutes from the break. McFadgen stepped up and delivered it beautifully into the top left corner. 2-1.

A third goal was then added to the away sides tally just before half time. After winning the ball back in midfield, McFadyen played a pass through to Mitchell who once again ran in but finished calmly with his weaker foot. 3-1.

Half time arrived and the lads got in for the rest. A tough first half in the wind but the team stuck in and gave themselves breathing space with a two goal lead. Once the break was over both teams set back out again and substitutes were introduced as Pengelley and Moore replaced Reid and Ruxton.

With just over half an hour to go, Mearns were awarded a penalty for a handball inside the box. The captain waited for the whistle before running on to send Milligan the wrong way. 3-2.

Two more substitutions were made as Carlin and Watt replaced Smith and Phillips in the hopes of keeping the lead while maintaining a more compact shape.

A corner was awarded to Kirrie with ten minutes left on the clock. Jessiman whipped it in and as it landed towards the front post, it somehow managed to treacle past the others and into the goal. 4-2.

Some more vital saves from Milligan kept the team in it and tremendous hard work shown by all involved saw out our second league win of the season. Full time.

A very hard fought win especially in the conditions of the weather. Credit to Mearns for a very competitive game throughout and we wish them the best for the rest of the season. We also hope their number seven who had to come off through an arm injury heals up soon.

Coming off the back of a disappointing result last Sunday the boys will be looking to put that right and get back to winning ways this weekend. 💪

A good win in the friendly midweek gave the lads a chance to get minutes in the legs and build some confidence and now the focus turns back to the league. 🔥

Another big test awaits and we’ll be looking for a strong performance, plenty of fight and a result to keep us moving forward. 🖤💙

🔷🔹 Kirrie Sundays 1-3 Johnshaven Athletic 🔹🔷

Kirrie Sundays hosted opponents Johnshaven Athletic in a well contested battle as both teams battled out for three points in the league. The last time these two faced off was for a spot in the Ian Cochrane Cup Final, where Kirrie ran out 3-1 victors scoring their three goals within the last five minutes of the game.

Before the match began, both teams observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for our manager and his family following the heartbreaking passing of his nephew, “Mr Leo”, the week prior.

Everyone at Kirrie was deeply saddened to hear of the news, and we stand in full solidarity with our manager and his family during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and condolences remain with them all.

The match had started and within the first ten minutes, the home side found themselves a goal down. A corner kick swung in was met by the unmarked player who headed home first time. 0-1.

Five minutes later, a second goal came for Johnshaven. A similar scenario where the ball was crossed into the area and was again met by an unchallenged player whose header rattled the crossbar and finished off by a player on the line. 0-2.

A sluggish first fifteen minutes for Kirrie but after the bad spell, they looked to get more of a hold on the game. The formation changed to a three at the back and soon better passing was displayed. A few chances came for the hosts but the Johnshaven goalkeeper had some fantastic saves to keep the ball out of his net.

The scores stayed the same at half time and both teams went in for their deserved breaks. A few slight niggles were shown from the first half but no changes were made at the time.

Once the second half started, Kirrie worked themselves well up the park and managed to pull a goal back within the opening minute of the half. Mitchell received the ball on the back foot, turned his man and finished low into the goal. 1-2.

The first of few substitutions was made by Kirrie to add more momentum and replace who was starting to feel their knocks more and more. Pittendreigh came off and on came Pengelley.

Johnshaven managed to earn their third and final goal to give themselves the two goal advantage again. Their winger did well to intercept the ball off the Kirrie defender, ran inside the box and placed his shot across the goal. 1-3.

As boys started to look more sore as the match went on, more substitutions were introduced. Watt replaced Phillip and Moore replaced Roberts.

Kirrie worked ever so hard to try and reduce the two goal deficit with ten minutes left on the clock but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. Johnshaven also had a chance to raise their advantage in the last moments but Milligan made a good point blank save to nullify.

The full time whistle blew and Kirrie suffered another tough defeat in the league. We would like to thank the referee officiating the game for agreeing to hold the minutes silence. Thanks also go out to Johnshaven and we wish them well for the remainder of the season.

🔷🔹 Kirrie Sundays 7-1 Anchor Athletic FC🔹🔷

Kirrie Sundays looked to finally earn their first three points in the league as they faced opponents Anchor Athletic at home. The pair faced off a little over a month ago in cup action with Kirrie coming out victorious with a 4-2 win. Since then, Kirrie’s luck has been all but great.

The match started and Kirrie set off well with a few good chances. Strikers Mitchell and Smith found themselves in good areas and tested the waters early doors but unfortunately no goals to match.

It was defender Pittendreigh who would open the scoring for Kirrie. A darting run up the right side seen him play a one-two pass with winger Smith and with his first attempt saved, the rebound fell straight to him and finished the second time of asking. 1-0.

The second goal for the home side came just five minutes after. Mitchell ran onto a pass played into the left channel, crossed low along the six yard line and his strike partner Smith was there to finish it off. 2-0.

Anchor would create a few chances throughout the half with set pieces and managed to pull a goal back from one. A long throw into the box was met first by their striker who headed the ball into the roof of the net. 2-1.

A third goal was added to Kirrie’s tally before the end of the first half. A corner whipped in from Jessiman was failed to clear and early substitute Moore did well to meet the ball first and drilled low into the goal. 3-1.

The match resumed for the second half and from there onwards, Kirrie ran riot on their opponents. Mitchell, who was having somewhat of a tough afternoon, eventually earned his first goal of the match. A threaded pass through the midfield met his path, went around the keeper and passed the ball into the back of the net. 4-1.

The fifth goal for Kirrie and second for Mitchell came just 5 minutes after. A pass from Moore bypassed two defenders and this time the striker wellied the ball into the roof of the net. 5-1.

With more substitutions made throughout the half, each player continuously worked hard for the team and our final two goals of the game came within the last ten minutes. Thomson’s header spilled from a corner and Phillips gambled correctly to get there first to finish. 6-1.

The last goal, a hattrick for Mitchell. As Kirrie’s pressure had Anchor pinned right into their box, the ball failed to clear and was eventually finished low under the goalkeeper by the striker. 7-1.

A fantastic way to bounce back from the last couple of bad games that’s been displayed in recent weeks. Thanks go to Anchor for the game and we wish them the very best for the remainder of the season.

🔷🔹 Kirrie Sundays 5-8 FC Nova 🔹🔷

Kirrie Sundays travelled up to Brechin to face opponents FC Nova in the EBM Cup quarter-final stages. After being dismantled 5-0 in the opening league game by the same team, Kirrie knew that a subpar performance would not be accepted.

The match kicked off and within ten minutes, the travelling side were a goal down. A long ball from their goalkeeper was flicked on by their striker and met the path of their winger who ran on to finish with ease. 0-1.

Kirrie reacted well to the goal and with some much better team play displayed, they managed to pull an equaliser back. Striker Mitchell gets through on goal after a long pass out the back and made no mistake with the finish. 1-1.

A foul was conceded on the edge of the Kirrie box and the hosts earned a free kick in a dangerous area. The taker stepped up and finished well into the corner to give them the lead again. 1-2.

A troubled spell took place for Kirrie and ended up losing three more goals before the end of the first half. All three were very preventable but a lot can be said after a game. 1-5.

Half time came and went and the lads set back out to try and right some of the wrongs displayed in the first half.

An opportunity to bring the scoreline back came for Kirrie but the Nova defence stood strong to stop it. A counter attack then followed by our opponents and as their player went to cross the ball in, it somehow managed to find its way into the net. 1-6.

With over half an hour still to play, Kirrie managed to find themselves a bit of better rhythm and looked to finally bring a game to the hosts. Within a ten minute spell, the away side were awarded two rightful penalties back-to-back and Mitchell stepped up both times and earned his hattrick. 3-6.

Nova steadied their ship slightly more and won the ball in their own half which allowed them to push further afield and earn themselves their seventh of the match. A header won through the middle seen their player run on and finish into the goal. 3-7.

With ten to go, a goal kick from Nova lofted up the park. The ball bounced and was met by their winger who ran up the line, cut inside and scored their final goal of the game. 3-8.

Despite looking down and out, Kirrie kept ploughing through and managed to earn two more goals through Mitchell running through and squaring to Roberts who finished off both chances. Unfortunately not enough to get the job done and bow out of the cup. 5-8.

Another week and another tough scoreline. The positives are still to be taken from Kirrie’s game but a lot of work is needed to cross out the moments that ultimately cost them in games. Credit to FC Nova for another tough game and we wish them well in the rest of their cup journey.

We continue on the road this Sunday as we make the trip to FC Nova for another big EBM Cup test. 🏆

The boys have been putting in the work and will be looking to keep the momentum going, battle for every ball and give everything for the shirt. 💪

Cup football brings that little bit extra, and we know we’ll need to be at our best from the first whistle. The lads are ready to go out there, compete and hopefully book our place in the next round! 👊🔥

🔷🔹 Kirrie Sundays 2-10 Strathmore Athletic 🔹🔷

⚽️ Goalscorers ⚽️ - Smith (1), Mitchell (1)

Kirrie Sundays travelled through to Forfar to play opponents Strathmore Athletic in league action. A game that’s always highly anticipated due to the rivalry between the two sides. Anything short of 100% effort would give their opponents the advantage in the tie.

Kick off was underway and from here onwards, full control was shown from Strathmore. A complete decimation from start to finish. Kirrie went two goals down inside the first ten minutes. A penalty was then awarded for the home side but fortunately the taker placed it well over. 0-2.

Strathmore would ease off the pressure and Kirrie would push on to get themselves back in the tie with two quick succession goals. A run up the left from Thomson seen the ball fall to young Smith who finished first time. The second, a penalty converted by Mitchell. 2-2.

Two further goals were added to the home sides tally before the end of the first half. Going into the break two goals down is always tough but a reaction from Kirrie was crucial if they were to see themselves claw it back. 2-4.

Once half time was over, Kirrie set back out to resume play again. Unfortunately, anything after that was all Strathmore. A riot running second half seen them take their tally all the way up to ten. A disastrous second half and the less said, the better. 2-10.

Nothing else to be said other than the better team won on the day, the competition against them was nothing near the standard of what’s expected from this team. Credit to Strathmore for showing how much they wanted the result and we wish them well for the rest of the season.
