Does your little one hang back when other children join in? 🐉

Trying something new can feel like a big step—for children and parents alike.

Our Little Dragons classes give children aged 4–6 opportunities to join in, learn new skills and experience those lovely “I did it!” moments, with encouragement along the way.

They don’t need to arrive feeling confident. Taking that first step is enough.

When I ask for a volunteer in a children's class, a few hands usually shoot straight into the air.

Then there is often another child whose hand rises to about shoulder height, pauses, and quietly comes back down.

I always notice that moment.

It would be easy to think confidence begins when a child stands at the front and performs perfectly. More often, it begins a little earlier. It begins when they consider joining in, even though part of them would still rather stay unnoticed.

That is why we do not rush children into the spotlight at CJMAA.

In a small group, they can become familiar with the room, the instructors and the other children. They can practise with a partner, answer a simple question, or demonstrate one movement instead of an entire sequence.

These may look like tiny steps, but they matter.

One week the hand reaches shoulder height. Another week it stays there. Eventually, the child is chosen and discovers that being seen was not as frightening as they expected.

The important part is not the demonstration itself. It is the decision to have a go without knowing exactly how it will turn out.

That kind of confidence is useful far beyond Taekwondo or Kickboxing. It helps a child speak up, try something unfamiliar and recover when things are not perfect.

If your child tends to watch carefully before joining in, that is not a lack of ability or potential. They may simply need the right space and enough time for their courage to catch up with their curiosity.

We are quite happy to let that confidence grow one small step at a time.
