I used to think ambition only cost energy.
Then life taught me it can also cost presence.
This week, I attended Handelsbanken’s annual corporate event at Lancaster Castle.
Good conversations. A serious room. A measured, optimistic economic update from Martin Björnberg.
Then Rachel unexpectedly finished work just early enough to join me for one glass of wine.
Afterwards, we went for pizza in the same restaurant where I took her on our first official date 24 years ago.
That small moment landed harder than expected.
Because leadership is not just about how well you perform in the room.
It is about what remains afterwards.
Patience. Judgement. Recovery. Presence. The people closest to you.
High achievers are often very good at performing.
But performance that leaves nothing behind eventually sends an invoice.
