⚽️ We call it the beautiful game for many reasons. ❤️

One of mine is that it introduced me to my best mate, Alex. 🤝

We coached the U8s and U9s together at Morecambe, and that’s where I fell in love with coaching. Who knows—if we hadn’t met, perhaps Double O Football Coaching wouldn’t exist today. 🔴🔵

Alex eventually decided to focus his efforts on his own pistachio business, which absolutely none of us saw coming! 🥜😂 But he’s doing brilliantly, just as I knew he would. Check out to see what he’s been building. 👏

We recently reunited in Sweden to coach at the Gothia Cup 🇸🇪🏆, and what a privilege it was to work alongside him again. I hadn’t realised how much I’d missed it.

Maybe one day we’ll run our own team together…

⚽️ Is being hard on young players the best way to get more from them?

During this game, the non-bib team could score two goals if they found the net within five seconds of regaining possession. As I counted down, they attacked with urgency—and the yellow team worked incredibly hard to recover.

Would the yellow team have tracked back as quickly if I hadn’t demanded it? Probably not.

But the demand was only one part of the coaching. Just as important was making sure their effort to recover was immediately recognised.

Young players can respond brilliantly when you challenge them, but first they need to know that you’re on their side.

Build the relationship, earn their trust and recognise their effort. Then demanding more can raise their level rather than lower their confidence. ❤️⚽️

Helping players improve is important—but so is building their confidence, supporting them through mistakes and seeing them take what they’ve learned into matches.

⚽️ Private coaching isn’t just for children trying to become professional footballers.

Improvement matters at every level.

These wall passes were performed by players at different stages of development. The speed, timing and technicality might differ, but each one represents progress for that individual.

That’s the value of working with Double O Football Coaching: every player is challenged at the right level, supported to improve from where they are now, and helped to take that development back into the football environment that matters to them.

Because becoming better at something you love is always worth investing in. ❤️⚽️

🏆 What a privilege it was to watch India lift the Gothia Cup after an incredible final against Brazil.

Around 400 people watching an U12 game—the atmosphere was unbelievable!

A coach’s view ⚽️

Two things stood out:

1️⃣ Both teams were masters of the basics: first touch, awareness of their surroundings, quick decisions and quality of pass.

2️⃣ The defending was fierce: no silly fouls, just grit, determination and complete commitment to every challenge—using both body and feet to win the ball. (You can see see how seriosuly one of my lads took this coaching point!)

🇸🇪 What an incredible week at the Gothia Cup! ⚽️

We were knocked out on penalties, but the boys showed real resilience and bounced back with a fantastic attitude. 👏

The football was brilliant, but so were the memories made off the pitch, from fireworks 🎆 and karaoke 🎤 to spending time together and, of course, plenty more football! ⚽️

Roll on next year! 🙌🇸🇪

A little follow-up from my previous post about my own confidence journey.

This is Atakan, or Ata as he’s known, one of the young players I coach. His confidence has grown massively, and now he proudly says his name with his own little twist...

And the best part? He came up with it himself during a little pep talk during the session. A small moment, but a great example of a young player starting to believe in himself.

Here's young Owen after just winning the Surrey Cup at Chelsea's training ground, about 14 years ago.

A very happy day, but what the photo doesn't show is a very underconfident kid on the inside.

I was an anxious lad who struggled socially with teammates, and when opportunities came up to move clubs and test myself at a higher level, I didn't have the confidence to take them.

28-year-old me wishes I had.

But 14-year-old Owen wasn't ready.

Everyone's journey is different, and that journey became a big reason why I got into coaching.

My philosophy is built around confidence.

Because confidence isn't something that appears overnight. It's built through small wins, brave decisions, and moments where players realise they are capable of more than they thought.

That's why celebrating those small wins is at the heart of every session.
