Today we travelled to Probus to begin our U13s season having been promoted into the Championship following our league success last season.
Having lost two important players to other clubs in the summer and also having implemented a new formation to better suit our players, I knew we were slightly weaker but a good preseason and one new addition gave me confidence going into this game.
We started brightly and as usual maintained control of the game, keeping possession well and growing in confidence with every pass made.
However despite this we were hit with a sucker punch when Probus found the back of the net within 10 minutes, a defensive mixup being the cause.
We quickly regained our composure and got back into the game with our striker Tyler scoring a well taken goal following excellent work by Oscar whose pinpoint pass found Tyler who smashed the ball home to make it one all.
Tyler again found himself in on goal soon after but was denied by the onrushing keeper.
Probus started to cause us problems down their right side, with their excellent winger constantly threatening our defence with pace and power, although thankfully we defended well and the attacks amounted to nothing.
Halftime came and the game was level at one apiece, a good teamtalk led to us making personnel changes and the players went back out for the 2nd half.
Substitute Freddie was excellent on the left in both attack and defence, he has found his spark again and it was great to see.
Lanivet had several more attempts on goal with Taylor hitting an absolute peach of a left footed volley which was somehow well saved, Gracie also stung his fingertips with a fierce strike but again the Probus goalkeeper was in fine form, denying every shot that came his way.
Unfortunately despite our efforts Probus scored twice more to seal the game and take all 3 points.
Whilst obviously disappointed not to get a result from the game, it was an excellent display from both teams and we noted that the step up into U13s brought with it more physicality which we will need to prepare ourselves for going forward if we want to make the season a success.
Overall it was a loss, but an acceptable one given the effort and workrate of every player involved, next week we take on Biscovey who will be another tough test I'm sure.
Player of the match goes to Oscar, who played multiple positions and was outstanding for the whole match.
