Just How Well Do You Know Your Bowls????

β“β“β“πŸ€· QUIZ TIME❓❓❓

With new people taking up the sport and learning the rules of the game we are trying to teach the rules and good ethics whilst also running a sports club and now maintaining two bowling greens.

Many times we are vilified for actually following the laws of the game BUT are praised for championing the sport. We have respect for the rules.

That said we also have a responsibility to fulfill our duties and governance including following our constitution. Many bye laws and rules have been in place many years and as new people start their bowling journey taking up roles some of the information gets missed, it is evident so much has been lost along the way.

We feel this is having a major detrimental impact on the sport. Volunteers try their best but are some out of their depth? Are bowling associations doing enough? Is there enough support for them?

The question to today -

Can you just walk away from one club to another without settling up?

Does your club have a set of rules? Have you seen them? How long has it been since they were updated?

What support can you access to help your club?

GREENER HAREHILLS PARK

Not just the grass!! πŸ˜…

So, as we approach the end of the summer season here at Harehills Park we look to what maintenance is needed, assess cost and viability and make plans for next season.

Our energy bill for last winter October 2025 to March 2026 has only just come through (that's a different story!)but what a massive reduction!

We don't have the 2024-2025 data to hand but we were told due to increased use our energy was around Β£2500 for the year!
This was heavily relied on in an attempt to close greens across Leeds last year.

Had clubs been made aware and given some credit then these costs could have been reduced long long ago we are certain!

Even looking at 2024 data we made a huge reduction of 65-70%

In the last winter period (Oct -March) it cost Β£217 πŸ™
Now, to be clear we have made some adjustments, been more aware, with support from our ward councillors Councillor Asghar Ali and Councillor Salma Arif we've been able to install more energy efficient lighting, anti frost heating and the benefits of doing so is clear. We've reduced our energy use from the data mentioned as part of the council consultation by an astonishing 80% πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

What is sad is that some clubs are already folding due to massive inflated figures being used during the consultation and this is WRONG. We have been fortunate to be able to keep our spaces in Harehills Park for the community run entirely on volunteers but some other clubs don't have that and it is unfair.

If you've ever wanted to try bowls get in touch. We have taster sessions coming up in October so can register now to take part πŸ™

Come stay active over the winter months, we play all year round and in all weathers (unless the green is flooded but doesn't happen often!)

Well..we are GREENER ALL ROUND NOW 🀣

It’s the final week on our top green as we head towards end‑of‑season renovations 😳
Where did that time go??

The season has flown by!

We’ve got our last home games this Monday and Tuesday, followed by our Heritage Cup this Sunday β€” a brilliant way to round off another busy year on the green! Spaces still available for anyone wanting to take part.

After that, the top green will be put to bed for essential end‑of‑season work, ready to come back even better next year. 😍

Huge thank you to everyone who’s supported, played, visited and volunteered throughout the season πŸ€—

The team is working hard behind the scenes to make sure the bottom green is in great condition for the colder months, so you can keep rolling right through the winter season.

Unfortunately it seems the animals of Farthing Wood have been enjoying our green space the last couple of weeks so we aspire to be ready before the end of September but at the very latest would be 3rd October 🀞

Will keep you all posted.

Have a great week!

πŸ†πŸ†MICK HALLS SUPER SINGLES 2026πŸ†πŸ†

WINNER - DARRYL HARRAPπŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

A heartfelt day of crown green bowling at Harehills Park today - filled with emotion, competition, laughter, torrential rain, blazing sunshine β€” and the unmistakable feeling that Mick Hall was watching over us. πŸ’š

The round robin brought together a strong field of bowlers, all playing in honour of Mick. The standard was superb throughout, with tight games, big breaks, and plenty of drama.

The final saw Darryl Harrap lift the title, beating last year’s winner β€” and his teammate β€” Adam Conlon. πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†πŸ† Well bowled Darryl πŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

Darryl reached the final after a hard‑fought win over Ira Jeffers.πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ
Adam booked his place by defeating Robert Spink. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Darryl’s victory carried extra meaning. With the recent passing of his father, the win β€” a moment of pride, strength, and emotion shared by everyone present. πŸ’š

After the round robin stages, spectators joined in a lively game of Spider. In a moment that felt almost spiritual, Rachaell Reeves Haiigh , bowling with Mick’s own woods, won the game πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ β€” a beautiful sign that Mick was still very much part of the day. πŸ₯°

The highest break of the event came from Laura Love, scoring an impressive 14 chalks on the bounce πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

Congratulations also to all raffle/scratch prize winners πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ (Marie has been banned next year!) 🀣

Events like this don’t happen without a team effort. What a team we have πŸ™

Huge thanks to members for supporting the day. All ⭐⭐⭐

Marie and Shane kept everyone fed and refreshed throughout.

David, working alongside Laura, ensured the competition ran smoothly from start to finish πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ (learnt from Gordon well πŸ€—) so really pleased πŸ™

Billy and Navie, Mick’s grandson and great‑grandson, proudly presented the prizes β€” a touching family moment and such a cutie! Thanks guys. πŸ₯°

And of course, thank you to our supporters and sponsors:

Mick’s Family, especially his wife Sue McClenaghan Hall , and for choosing Harehills Park to host once again. 😘 It is something we feel privileged to host.

Ted's Waste Services, Kasa Convenience Store, Belle Isle and Christine Crossley πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

Their support helped create a total prize pot of Β£660. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

🌦️ We had everything from torrential rain to glorious sunshine β€” classic British weather, and exactly the kind of mischief Mick would have enjoyed. It felt like he was having a laugh with us once again πŸ˜….πŸ’™

The Memorial Super Singles was more than a competition β€” it was a celebration of Mick Hall’s legacy, his family, his friends, and the sport he loved.

Thank you all for joining us once again. A brilliant day and a brilliant green despite the weather, thanks to Shane and the team for preparing both the surface and surrounds 😍

Mick - hope we made you proud - Gone but definitely not forgotten πŸ’šπŸ’š
