Do you even have strength worth in your Hyrox training?
It seems like most Hyrox classes are based around conditioning.
But good strength & conditioning principles would tell you to isolate exercises and build them up so you become really strong and able to do them with as little effort as possible.
That doesn’t come from endless metcons.
That’s strength training & exercises NOT under fatigue, before they’re integrated into conditioning too.
Don’t get me wrong, there needs to be a lot of running and conditioning too, but strength is a key ingredient & keeps your running fresh & fast!
Tough Cookie Gym
COACHING A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF FUNCTIONAL FITNESS, NUTRITION, LIFESTYLE AND MENTAL FORTITUDE In 2020 we also created the Tough Cookie Tribe!
A community of fitness buffs who get fitter and stronger, mentally and physically every day! They're learning to believe in and challenge themselves to be better, happier, more fulfilled people. They work on habits, lifestyle, their mental fortitude and of course their fitness! We're creating 'fit' individuals - in both senses of the word!
You still need to know what good looks and feels like, but after that your focus is on getting a good grip on what your body is doing.
You’ll likely notice yourself improving your own technique intuitively.
The important thing is not to judge though. This isn’t lifting a barbell and saying “oh that was crap” - that’s not even useful.
It’s going “oh I felt that a lot in my arms…”
And if you know you’re aiming to feel more push in your legs you’ll start adjusting.
But if you keep ‘trying’ to push with your legs without realising you’re pulling with your arms… you might just keep pulling.
Equally - it’s the pink elephant… if you think ‘don’t pull with the arms’ you might still end up pulling with the arms, or even focussing on something that has already stopped happening…
The point is more to get in tune with yourself. Then getting better becomes much easier.
We do this by trying to ask the right questions as well as offering the cues and feedback.
Try to ask yourself how your movement looks and feels each time you lift without judging it - see what happens.

What makes you yawn when you hear it?
Small group personal training gives you loads of personal coaching time. Real time feedback and improvement, not just instruction. And it also means we can have real talk about how to help you improve.
The last vid I posted like this caught plenty of instruction but not so much of the coaching, so I wanted to showcase that in this one.
But wait, there’s still more to this.
Often the art of coaching is in what’s not said, or in the way we encourage people to figure things out for themselves with some nudges and guide rails.
And of course, there’s the team effort too.
I’ll capture and show some of this soon too.
But needless to say, there’s layers to good training.
Don’t just try to ‘get tired’.
Don’t settle for ‘don’t do it like that, do it like this’.
When the guidance is just right, you’ll start to feel like you own it. Like you’re finding your flow. Like you’re making it happen!
If you want to coach with me, drop me a DM.
Peak week isn’t an all out f**k it fest.
And neither should any of your workouts be.
The secret sauce is in the bigger picture - not the individual piece.
This section is for engine…
This section is for muscular endurance…
I’m glad as least some thought has gone into it but it’s still random s**t thrown together.
Making it fit like a puzzle is the art.

After we completed Athx, Jen said to me “How good is it that we’re able to do something like this. We’re fit enough to be able to rock up, and just do it.”
People outside of the fitness life don’t realise how fit they can be, and people in it forget how fit they’ve become because they’re surrounded by others doing the same.
At TC we don’t focus really heavily on how you look, but we focus on how you perform for life and how you show up, so that you can just enjoy the experiences life has to offer at the drop of a hat!
If you want to heighten your experience of life, you’ve got the capacity.
And also, as a side project or a by-product, you’ll probably see your body change too…
That’s the advantage of training the way we do - best of both worlds.
I’m lucky to have fallen into the fitness world and grateful to have the fitness and capacity at 39 years old to just go and do whatever I want (physically) without being held back by my capabilities or even my confidence…
Thoroughly enjoyed the Athx experience this weekend, and learned some good stuff that we may or may not bring back to the gym and our community!
Get fit for life with us!

Or just train for a good life!!
Drop me a DM and let’s chat.
I see the same thing over and over running a gym, and witnessing people with clarity, with a plan and with a coach vs people without.
And I’ve been there myself!
So maybe now’s the time to change it up and at least try out that next level of fitness with personal training!?
Check out all the results we get and then drop us a DM saying ‘PLAN’ to find out more!

“Tough cookie gym has truly become my happy place.. somewhere I now realise I need in my life, not just want.
From the moment I joined, it’s given me so much more than just a place to train. I’ve built genuine, lasting friendships with people who lift you up just as much outside the gym as they do in it. The atmosphere is supportive, motivating, and honestly hard to put into words unless you’ve experienced it.
The coaching and programming has been incredible. It’s pushed me to achieve things I never even knew I wanted to, let alone believed I could do. I’m now the strongest I’ve ever been, feeling confident in my body, and (touch wood) staying injury-free,.which says everything about the quality of guidance and care here.
What I didn’t expect was how much it would positively impact my life beyond fitness. It’s created a lifestyle that benefits not just me, but my kids too setting a healthy, strong example and bringing so much more balance and energy into our daily lives.
If you’re thinking about joining, do it. It’s more than a gym its a community, a support system, and for me, a huge part of what keeps me feeling like myself.
I honestly thought I didnt have time to commit to the gym. Now I find time and realise how important it is for me.”
Ready to make this your reality too!?
DM me “RESULTS” & let’s get started.
What fitness means to me has gotten deeper and deeper the more time I’ve spent with it.
From the first hand experiences its given me, to the knowledge I’ve acquired about the benefits it has that you can’t see, and what can be predicted about your future based on what you do with it now.
People often talk about your relationship with food, but you have a relationship with fitness too.
I strongly recommend you put time and effort into it!
If you’re not sure of the best way to do that, drop me a DM saying HELP & I’ll take it from there!

An embarrassing moment was also a memory and a highlight I cherish…
A while back I’d signed up to do an Indi event at Northern Champs which is a CrossFit comp I’d done a couple of times before in pairs.
This time though… I was solo.
I’d entered a category that I knew was at the edge of what i was capable of but I’m not one to be put off by a challenge.
I knew I’d be expected to perform some movements I didn’t have a high capacity on like muscle ups.
When they came up in a workout, I relished it, even though I knew I’d be well behind my competitors…
That’s not the humbling part though.
One movement I still massively struggled with was Handstand Walking…
Well of course that came up as well.
Cue: s**tting bricks…
So, workout starts, all fine, and here comes the first handstand walk…
I fall over.
I try again. I fall again.
Eventually after another few attempts, I make the distance and move onto the next part of the workout.
And then, back to handstand walks.
Again I try. Again I fail.
Remember too that lots of people are watching, and my competitors are steaming ahead!
After another good few failed attempts, I eventually get across, just for the workout time cap to hit… and I’m done.
Very humbling.
Potentially embarrassing…
But I wasn’t embarrassed.
I was in fact, well chuffed!
It felt so good to put myself out there and manage a couple of handstand walks, as well as muscle ups, under a day of fatigue in a competition environment…
I know I’m very lucky to be a coach who’s developed a mindset that sees this as a huge win and not a massive fail.
I embraced the fact that I sucked a little bit but I didn’t mind at all because I loved the challenge.
It lit a fire in me to get better and work on my weaknesses.
I’m not sure other people watching felt the same and maybe were embarrassed for me, but It’s something I remember quite fondly.
Very humbling, but very happy!
