Strength Training 'v' Cardio - that is the question??

Both are great ways to exercise and have health benefits. If your primary goal is to lose weight then strength training with weights and resistance should be your priority.

Exercising with weights will build muscle, which increases your resting metabolic rate (RMR), this means you burn more calories throughout the day, even while resting. Only doing cardio classes (like Zumba & dance classes) can cause muscle loss if you fall into calorie deficit. Strength training preserves lean muscle while reducing body fat and will help you stay independent at you age.

How your body changes as you age

You may think that nothing is changing as you age if you can manage to keep everything about the same size. This graphic shows how the internal body composition changes as you age. There appears to be no change to the limb size on the outside, but inside muscle mass is decreasing as a fat layer around the muscle increases - overall looks the same.

To maintain a healthy level of muscle mass it's important to find the right level of consistent exercise to slow down this process, or even increase muscle mass again if already lost. It is possible with our Fun Fit (Functional Fitness) and Strength classes to regain muscle and keep strong as you age

Why Isometric Exercise?

Isometric holds like the wall sit will get your blood vessels to compress. When you release, they relax more than before.

This type of exercise is great for reducing arthritis pain by strengthening the muscles around the joint without forcing painful range of motion. It also has a positive effect on your blood pressure.

We have a variety of formats in our classes, attending both classes every week and you'll really notice a difference in a month or two.
