🌳 PARK UPDATE: The Old Playground is Getting a Makeover! 🚲 🛼
Following our AGM in April, where attendees voted for this to be the committee's main initiative to focus on this year, the Friends of Western Flatts Cliff Park have been working hard to secure funding to transform the old, derelict playground into a vibrant community events hub and wheeled activity space for local residents.
We are incredibly excited to announce that, after working closely with Leeds City Council, we have secured funding for 75% of the total project cost in just three months!
Here is where things stand and how we plan to bring this space back to life:
Phase 1 (Happening NOW!): Work is officially underway! The old, decaying rubber surface has already been dug up, and the council will be retarmacking the entire area to create a smooth, flat space, alongside repairing the entrance ramp, fencing repairs and new gates. We are aiming for this phase to be complete and fully resurfaced by October!
Phase 2 (Volunteer Spruce-Up): Once the groundwork is complete, we will be focusing on general clean-up work to really finish off the area, including clearing weeds and painting the fencing. We plan to achieve this through dedicated volunteering events. Watch this space for updates on how this will take shape!
Phase 3 (The Future Vision): Subject to securing further funding, our ultimate goal is to install a brilliant thermal graphic printed track across the tarmac - check out this video of the fantastic track recently installed at Woodhouse Moor to see what we're aiming for: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1498234101606683! If budget allows, we would also love to add new seating and a community notice board to keep everyone updated on upcoming park activities and events.
Why is this so important for Wortley?
This project will replace an eye-sore with a safe, vehicle-free space where local children can gain confidence on their bikes, skates and scooters. Longer term, subject to the necessary permissions, we hope this versatile flat surface can host a whole range of community activities - from sports and fitness groups, to music in the park events, even seasonal markets.
