Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a major Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. It is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada (AugustβSeptember), according to the Hindu lunar calendar.
β¨ Celebrations vary across regions but typically include:
π Fasting and night vigils, as Krishna is believed to have been born at midnight
π πΈ Decorated temples and homes, with cradles symbolising the infant Krishna
π Re-enactments of Krishna's life, especially his childhood pranks and miracles
πΆπ Devotional singing (bhajans) and dance-dramas (Rasa Lila)
π₯£π€Έ Dahi Handi events, particularly in Maharashtra, where teams form human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high above the ground, symbolising Krishna's love for butter
π¬π Offerings of sweets and fruits, especially favourites of Krishna like butter and milk-based dishes
πβ¨ Wishing all those celebrating a joyful and peaceful Janmashtami!

September celebrates East and South East Asian (ESEA) Heritage Month.
is an annual observance held throughout September in the United Kingdom. It celebrates the heritage, culture, history, and contributions of East and South East Asian communities, including people with roots in countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and others across the region.
Why it is important?
This month is culturally significant as it provides a platform to recognise and honour the diverse identities and experiences of ESEA communities in the UK. It aims to challenge stereotypes, raise awareness of underrepresented histories, and foster solidarity and inclusion. The 2026 theme is βEvolving Threadsβ, honouring the ways in which stories, actions and solidarities are continuously woven together across time, place, and community.
ESEA Heritage Month Every September, besea.n invites you to enjoy a month-long, collaborative programme of events, dedicated to East and South East Asian heritage, culture, history and everything in between. Itβs a chance to celebrate, acknowledge and learn about the incredible ways in which our communities have help...
