* The cost of the drysuit will be dr

Why a cheaper but better product doesn’t sell 20/11/2025

The fear of spending less???
The second question we get asked after “which dryglove system…” is “why are your drysuits considerably less expensive?”. The answer – “maths”
You want to buy a drysuit from us with all the features you have always dreamt of and it works out to be £1200.
That’s £1000 before tax and you get your made to measure dream drysuit and we make enough money on it to keep the lights on. Most other drysuits are not bought directly from the factory in which they are made. That factory, probably sensibly placed in a country where production costs are much lower than here in the UK, sell it to one of our much loved global dive brands. They sell it to one of their regional distributors, they sell it to your local dive shop, they sell it to you. This is where the maths comes in, everyone rightly needs to make a profit on that sale.
So a standard sized suit produced with cheaper labour might only “cost” £700
The Brand adds a margin, x35%(?) = £945
Plus the Distributor’s margin x35%(?) = £1275
Plus the Retailer’s margin x35%(?) = £1722
Sold to you, including sales tax = £2066 (you could spend +£3000!)
You have saved £866 and have got a made to measure drysuit to your exact personal specification. Could not be an easier choice right? Maybe not, because even us simple divers are subject to the psychology around purchasing. We are unconsciously believe if we are spending less we are getting less – this YouTube short from the marketing legend Rory Sutherland explains it brilliantly.
Remember the Seaskin drysuit actually costs MORE to manufacture!!

Why a cheaper but better product doesn’t sell Rory Sutherland discusses why when there is a product that is cheaper and better than another product neither sell. Sutherland is marketing and advertising e...
