Using a weight to add extra šŸŒ¶ļø to your core work!

I can’t cover every layer of this topic in a three minute reel. It’s nuanced, complex and the internet has made it even more confusing for women over 35 trying to understand what training they actually need.

But here’s what I really want you to understand: there is a lot more happening in this conversation online than people simply trying to help you choose the ā€œbestā€ workout for you.

Pilates is one of the fastest growing movement forms in the world. Women are leaving traditional training spaces in huge numbers - and with that comes a lot of strong opinions about what Pilates can and cannot do.

I do understand parts of it.

Many modern Reformer classes focus heavily on lighter springs, core based flows and work that challenges your deep stabilisers. That work has enormous value and I will always advocate for it. But if classes never progress resistance, never load the larger muscle groups and never evolve beyond endurance-style training - then yes, I understand why some people say those classes aren’t building full body strength the way many women think they are.

It’s important to remember Pilates and weight training are not the same thing and they’re not supposed to be. They share the similar goal of building strength, but they take a completely different approach to get there. Different stimulus, different methods, different ways of challenging the body.

Unfortunately the conversation online has become overly simplified. Many people with large platforms have experienced one style of Reformer training and reduced an incredibly broad, evolving method down to one sentence: ā€œPilates can’t build strength.ā€

Pilates absolutely can build strength when the system is understood properly. When resistance is progressed intelligently. When the whole body is trained. When mobility, control, load, speed, breath and movement quality are all working together.

This is why I talk about programming so much.

Not because every woman needs to train harder, but because Pilates is capable of far more than what many people have experienced.

Part two of this convo is coming: the kinds of programming that actually help women build strength through Pilates. 27/05/2026
