Most teenagers fight with their parents about curfew. Laura Dekker fought the Dutch state for the right to sail around the planet.

Born on a boat in a New Zealand harbor during her parents' own seven-year voyage, Dekker announced at 13 that she intended to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone. The Netherlands disagreed — child-protection authorities took the family to court to stop her. It took ten months and a string of hearings before the judges finally stepped aside in 2010 and left the decision to her family. She left that August, at 14, aboard Guppy, a 40-foot ketch she had helped refit herself.

What followed was 518 days and roughly 27,000 nautical miles — squalls off the Galápagos, the long empty Indian Ocean, a rounding of the Cape of Good Hope in some of the world's most dangerous waters — handled with a calm that embarrassed every adult who had called the voyage impossible.

On January 21, 2012, she sailed into Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten, aged 16 years and 123 days: the youngest solo circumnavigator in history. Guinness declined to certify the record — they'd stopped encouraging "youngest" attempts — which bothered her not at all. She hadn't done it for them.

The sea doesn't check your age. It only checks your seamanship.
