🤔 I’ve been asked a few times, ‘what’s the difference between Equine Physios, Chiropractors and Massage Therapists?’
I hope this helps a little……..
⭐️ Equine Physios, Chiropractors and Massage Therapists can and do work together as a team effectively to improve the health and well-being of horses.
⭐️ Equine Physios are trained to treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal injuries such as soft tissue and joint problems. Physios use a hands on approach including massage, stretching and exercises to increase flexibility, strengthen core muscles and refuse pain, especially after injury or surgery.
⭐️ Chiropractors focuses on the spine of the horse, joint dysfunction and it’s effects on the nervous system. Chiropractors are particularly useful where joint motion is reduced or pain is apparent.
⭐️ Massage Therapists can identify area of tension, stiffness and soreness in muscles, tendons and ligaments. By using their hands, massage therapists can use a range of massage techniques to improve circulation, reduce pain and promote relaxation.
💪🏻 By working together, each of these professionals can use their own set of skills to complement each other, giving a better outcome for the overall well being, healthcare and performance of the horse.

🐴 Subclavious 🐴
What does your therapist do to release tension?
Function ✍️
Suspends the horses trunk and stabilises the shoulder joint.
When things go wrong ⛔️
The horse can become short striding, start tripping, abnormality within the gait, incredibly tight and sore throughout the entire neck and shoulder, difficulty flexing and bending, may show changes in temperament due to pain and tension.
What can cause this? 🤔 The truth is, there could be many factors, here are a few to consider:
Incorrect tack.
Unbalanced rider.
Working on the forehand.
Injury/accident.
General stress and tension of surrounding areas.
Over work, Insufficient warm up/cool down.
A slip, trip or fall in the field.
General playing with other horses in the field, rough or hard ground.
It is important to note, sometimes horses (just like us) can suffer with general tension throughout their body through no fault of riders, handlers or carers.
How does your therapist help release this? 🙌
Your Qualified therapist will do a static and dynamic observation and take a full clinical history. A full palpation will be carried out followed by treatment. You may see your therapist using preparation work such as blood saturation techniques, deep stroking and compression around the serratus muscle and other main neck muscles surrounding there, followed by a skilled roll out of the muscle in this area which can almost feel trapped under the scapula when tight. Space is created in a gentle manner as this roll out happens as you can see in our photo below.

A Common Question 🤔
Massage Therapists, Physios or Chiropractors?
Who should you use? 🤯
📌 Massage therapists, equine physios, and chiropractors can work together effectively to improve the overall health and performance of horses. Each of these professionals has a unique set of skills and techniques that can complement each other, leading to better outcomes for the horse.
📌 Equine physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat musculoskeletal injuries, including soft tissue and joint problems. They use various techniques, including massage, stretching, and exercise therapy, to improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance performance.
📌 Chiropractors specialise in treating spinal problems and joint dysfunction. They use spinal manipulation and other manual therapies to restore proper joint movement and alleviate pain.
📌 Massage therapists use their hands to manipulate soft tissue, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They can identify areas of tension, stiffness, and soreness, and use various massage techniques to reduce pain, improve circulation, and promote relaxation.
❤️ By working together, these professionals can provide a comprehensive approach to treating musculoskeletal issues in horses. For example, a massage therapist can help to loosen tight muscles and prepare the horse for chiropractic adjustment. The chiropractor can then perform spinal manipulation to restore proper joint movement, and the physiotherapist can use exercise therapy to strengthen weak muscles and prevent further injury.
💪 Working together, massage therapists, equine physios, and chiropractors can provide a holistic approach to equine healthcare, improving the overall well-being and performance of the horse.
The story of the "little pamper session"
💥 Massage is so powerful in releasing muscle tension because it helps to increase blood flow to the muscles, which can bring additional oxygen and nutrients to the area.
💥 This increased blood flow helps to flush out any waste products that may have accumulated in the muscles, such as lactic acid, which can contribute to muscle soreness and stiffness.
💥 In addition to improving blood flow, massage can also help to stimulate the nervous system, which can have a calming effect on the muscles. This helps to reduce muscle tension and promote relaxation.
💥 Massage can also help to break up adhesions or knots in the muscles, which can be a source of pain and discomfort.
💥 Massage therapists apply pressure and manipulate the soft tissues of the body, a massage therapist can help to release these adhesions and restore normal muscle function.
🐎 Massage is a really powerful tool for releasing muscle tension and promoting relaxation, and helps to manage a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.
Your horse's range of movement improves, your horse's circulation improves, mental and physical wellbeing has improved 👏
All in a days work 👌

That’s the first case study submitted yesterday. Today I have received the fab news that it has been marked as a pass.
Now on to the final two case studies this weekend ready to hand in on Monday for final markings and hopefully that all important pass!!
Life Lessons of a Horse Person:
1. People who don't take care of their own horses will be the first ones to tell you how to care for yours.
2. You should never buy a cheap girth!
3. A handsome horse who's badly behaved will become a lot less attractive in about 15 min.
4. People who think they have nothing more to learn about riding, hit the ground the hardest.
5. Children and ponies are natural allies and often have identical dispositions.
6. The richest horse people often look the poorest. I speak from experience 🤣
7. The closeness of a horse is one of the sweetest smells in the world.
8. A solitary ride through the bush is more beneficial than six months with the best psychiatrist.
9. The worse a person rides, the more likely they are going to blame it on the horse. !!
10. The best thing about going to the barn first thing in the morning is that horses don't care how you look.
11. If a dealer insists a horse is worth twice what he's asking, he's usually worth half that much.
12. The best way to appreciate how another person rides is to get on their horse.
13. I can recognize another horse person no matter what town, city, state, county or country I visit.
14. You can never have too many hoof picks.
15. It is not wise to argue with something that outweighs you buy 1,000 pounds
16. I'd rather have a horse with a perfect mind than a perfect head.
17. Eight hours is too long to be in the saddle!
18. If you think you have left the water on in the barn - you have, if
you think you have closed the pasture gate - you haven't.
19. When someone asks you if you like their horse, always say yes
20. The happiest people I know own horses, dogs, cats and at least one deranged goat or donkey.
21. If you're looking for the perfect horse you will never own one.
22. Owning a horse can either make a marriage or break it.
23. I can't stand to have an empty stable.
24. You shouldn't talk about your first place ribbon to someone that
came in second.
25. If someone says that a horse has a little buck, it has a BIG buck.
26. If we need rain, schedule a show, if you want it to quit raining
put down fertilizer or grass seed.
27. I've never warmed up to someone that didn't want to walk down to the stables.
28. A clean stable and a sparkling horse are among life's great pleasures.
29. Even giving away horses can be too expensive, and free horses are never truly free.
30. No matter how badly behaved you are, your horse always gives you a second chance.
31. A more expensive horse doesn't make a better one.
32. Losing a horse can break your heart, but it will have been worth it.

Carrot Between Front Legs
Aim:
To lift and flex the withers, neck and back.
To increase core stability, the musculature of the top line, abdominal strength and back flexibility.
How to do it:
Using a carrot, encourage the horse to bring his head down then back between his front legs.
Keep the carrot close to the lips to discourage ‘bounce’.
Hold the stretch for 5-10 seconds before allowing the horse to take the carrot.
Repeat 2-3 times per session gradually increasing the stretch by taking the head further back.
This exercise is great for flexing the base of the neck and lifting the back by stimulating the abdominal muscles. This promotes correct posture and support for the back.
*Please ensure muscles are warmed up before carrying out any stretches to avoid causing injury
