Not the most glamorous photograph we've ever posted – but we're rather proud of what it represents.

These boxes are an export order packed and waiting for collection from our factory in Leicestershire. Inside are Sub Zero products heading overseas.

While so much clothing sold in Britain is manufactured thousands of miles away and imported into the UK, we're still doing things a little differently.

🌍 And we export Sub Zero products around the world.

We've been manufacturing technical outdoor clothing in Britain for decades, and seeing a shipment like this ready to leave the factory still gives us a great deal of satisfaction.

🔦 THE ONE THING WE'D PUT IN YOUR RUCKSACK THIS OCTOBER…

A head torch!

You can set off for an afternoon walk in perfectly good daylight, but at this time of year it's surprisingly easy to underestimate how quickly you're going to run out of it.

A slower section of the route, an unexpected detour, stopping for longer than planned – and suddenly that final mile looks very different.

A small head torch takes up hardly any room in your rucksack and is one of those pieces of kit you may rarely need. But when you do need it, you'll be very glad it's there. And don't rely on your phone torch – you may need that battery for navigation or making a call.

🔋 Check the charge before you leave.
🎒 Keep it somewhere easy to reach.
🔦 Carry it even if you're planning to be home well before dark.

Recognise these?

These are Sub Zero Factor 2 unisex thermal mid layer tops photographed back in 1992.

The colours and styling might give their age away, but the principle behind Factor 2 hasn't changed – an insulating thermal layer designed to be worn as part of a layering system.

More than three decades later, we're still manufacturing Factor 2 here in Leicestershire. 🇬🇧

The garments have evolved over the years, along with the fabrics, colours and manufacturing processes, but Factor 2 remains an important part of the Sub Zero range.

And we have to admit... that purple is very 1992. 😂

🎒 WHAT NEVER LEAVES YOUR WALKING RUCKSACK?

Most of us have one or two bits of kit that stay in the rucksack regardless of where we're walking or what the forecast says.

For us, there are a few things worth carrying even when you don't expect to need them:

🔦 Head torch
🩹 Small first aid kit
🌧️ Waterproof
💧 Water
🗺️ Map / navigation backup
👕 Spare layer
🍫 Emergency snack

None of them take up a huge amount of room, but a walk doesn't always go according to plan.

So what's the one thing that NEVER comes out of your walking rucksack?

And we're expecting at least one person to say emergency chocolate. 🍫😂

👕 ONE THICK JUMPER OR SEVERAL THINNER LAYERS?

When the temperature starts dropping, it's tempting to reach for the thickest jumper you own.

But for walking and other outdoor activities, several lighter layers are usually much more practical.

Why?

🌡️ You can regulate your temperature – take a layer off when you're working hard and put it back on when you stop.

💧 Moisture can move away from your skin – a suitable base layer helps manage perspiration rather than leaving you feeling damp.

💨 Different layers do different jobs – your base layer manages moisture, your mid layer provides insulation and your outer layer protects against wind and rain.

🎒 You're more adaptable – particularly useful in British weather, where conditions can change remarkably quickly.

The important thing is that the layers work together as a system, rather than simply piling on as much clothing as possible.

It's exactly why our own thermal clothing is divided into base layers and insulating mid layers, rather than trying to make one garment do everything.

🇬🇧 FACTORY FRIDAY: CAN YOU SEE A PAIR OF THERMAL LEGGINGS YET?

This is one pair of Sub Zero Factor 2 thermal leggings – or at least, it will be shortly!

What you're looking at are the individual fabric panels after they've been cut in our Leicestershire factory, ready for the next stage of production.

Each piece has its own job and needs to be accurately cut before they can be sewn together to create the finished garment.

It perhaps looks surprisingly complicated for something that eventually becomes a pair of thermal leggings.

Next stop: the sewing machines. 🧵

🥾 YOUR WALKING BOOTS GET ALL THE ATTENTION. BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR SOCKS?

When you're heading out for a September walk, it's easy to spend plenty of time thinking about boots, waterproofs and what layers to wear.

But a good pair of walking socks can make just as much difference to how comfortable you are at the end of the day.

As temperatures start to change, the right socks can help:

🧦 Manage moisture around your feet
🧦 Provide cushioning where you need it
🧦 Reduce rubbing inside your boots
🧦 Keep your feet comfortable as conditions change

And don't assume wool is only for cold weather. Wool is particularly useful for walking because of its ability to manage moisture and help regulate temperature.

After all, even the best walking boots aren't much fun if your feet are uncomfortable halfway through the walk.

A cool start can quickly turn warm once you're moving, while sunshine, wind and rain can all make an appearance before you get home. 🌤️💨🌧️

The solution is layering.
