Tragedy in Martial Arts: Young Karate Champion Sasan Azadvar Executed
IRAN – The martial arts world is in mourning following the ex*****on of Sasan Azadvar, a 21-year-old Kyokushin Karate champion. Azadvar was executed by Iranian authorities on May 1, 2026, after being convicted of "Moharebeh" (enmity against God) related to his alleged involvement in nationwide protests
International human rights organizations have condemned the move, citing a lack of fair trial and due process. Despite global pleas from the sports community, the sentence was carried out, sparking outrage across the globe. Azadvar is remembered by his peers not only as a talented fighter but also as a symbol of the ongoing struggle for freedom.

And the trolls just keep trying…still not impressed.
Social media is packed with loud opinions from people who have no business speaking on the subject. No experience, no depth...just recycled takes built off clips, comments, and whatever they watched last week.
Let’s be clear about something:
If you haven’t put in the consistent decades on the mat, your opinion is irrelevant.
Not “different.” Not “another perspective.”
Irrelevant.
I see it constantly...BJJ fanboys talking like their system is untouchable, people trashing Kata like they’ve ever actually committed to learning it, and armchair experts who think watching fights makes them fighters.
It doesn’t.
That’s not experience. That’s entertainment.
Expertise comes from time, pressure, failure, repetition, and years of consistent training. Not bouncing between gyms. Not cherry-picking techniques. Not sitting on a couch breaking down videos like you’ve lived it.
And if that offends you, read it again.
Last week alone, my spam box was full of this garbage...comments, personal attacks, the usual weak attempts to get a reaction. That’s the level of maturity we’re dealing with. And it gets handled the same way every time: delete, block, move on.
No discussion. No debate. No time wasted.
For those who don’t know me...I’ve spent 30 years training across multiple martial arts, I’ve competed, trained in combatives, and learned from people who earned their knowledge the hard way.
That’s the difference.
And I’ve also turned people away from my dojo for the same reason. Ive had people come in wanting to “improve his striking,” but he had zero interest in actually learning what I teach. That’s not a student, that’s someone looking to cherry-pick and stay comfortable.
That mindset doesn’t last. It never does.
Here’s the reality most don’t want to hear:
You don’t get to talk like an expert if you’ve never committed like one.
So no, I’m not offended.
I don’t argue.
I don’t explain myself to people who haven’t earned the right to have that conversation.
Because at the end of the day...
If I don’t respect your experience, I don’t value your opinion.
And most of the noise out there?
Is coming from people who’ve done nothing worth respecting. They are simply tourists perusing the martial arts...not experts training every day.

Peter first came on to my radar in the early 00s from the pages of "Martial Arts Illustrated "
Like many of you I suspect. It wasn't long before I was signing up to a seminar with Peter and Geoff Thompson another MAI regular in Coventry , I at the time was a fresh faced 20 something purple belt in Wadoryu karate . And to be honest I thought I knew it all ! (Oh the naivete of youth!)
That seminar changed my life .
Within moments of stepping into hall the reality hit me, "you're not in Kansas anymore! "
Listening and watching Peter and Geoff do their thing was awe-inspiring!
But also a big reality check.
At first, like many people, I didn't want to believe that what I've been taught wasn't going to work in the "real world" and was only useful in the dojo......but it was true...things had to change.
After a few more years I earned my 1st Dan black belt in Wadoryu Karate under sensei, Tony, Ryan and sense Jim Healy. That is when the learning process really began, for over 10 years I trained with everyone and anything I could. I joined the police, to test my training and then the prison service.
I decided to start teaching in 2018, and it was a no brainier as to which organisation I wanted to join, I remember sending an email, and a few days later getting a call from Peter explaining everything that was required. At the end of the call I was invited to his "Thursday morning club" at the time I had no idea what It was.
The next Thursday I drove up the M1 at some ungodly time with a mix of excitement and nerves , upon arriving at the British combat academy I was met by Peter and was immediately put at ease by him, and after a cup of weapons grade coffee and a chat,
I experienced the "double hip" for the first time. (It really is as good as people say !) I was glad when the rest of the Thursday morning gang arrived!
It was without doubt the hardest but best training session I've ever done! I felt like a Sunday league football player training at Manchester United ! ( I still do !)
One Thursday morning that really stands out for me was the day I took my what I thought was my 2nd Dan , after a brilliant session with the others I had the pleasure of a one to one master class with Peter. This entailed Lots of pad work, corrections and advice but the encouragement of him shouting "Shot" when I hit the pad with everything I had made me try even harder!
We stopped for a moment, and got talking about "bad position punching " Peter said that I should be able to "hit as hard standing up ,as tying your shoes" I ask what he meant ?
Peter, knelt down in front of me pretending to tie his shoe, and then without warning hook punched me in the left thigh !
It was like being hit with a sledgehammer!
I hobbled around the mat, shouting a string of expletives as my leg went dead!!
"Nice example peter you could have explained that to me verbally!! " I said
Peters response was brilliant, "I could have but where's the fun in that ?
You've passed by the way! "
A week later my BCA certification arrived in the post, but to my confusion it said 3RD DAN
My first thought was it was an administration error, (not that I'd ever admit it to Dawn )
I called Peter on his mobile and explained the reason for the call, he went very quiet and said " It's not a mistake, I'm to important to be talking to lowly 2nd dans....... you earned your 3rd, Not falling over from that punch. "
I've never been prouder!!
Peter meant so much to so many and for good reason he was one of a kind .
A knowledgeable mentor, a phenomenal, martial artist , fantastic teacher, and a friend.
They do say never meet your heroes, but I'm so glad I did .
Rest in peace Peter
