An updated calendar of our taekwondo events this year, with the new UKITF East Regional competition on Sat 11th July.

This regional competition is a new initiative to encourage students who might be considering competing, but find the prospect of a national competition understandably daunting. The aim is to proved a competitive event without the pressure and expectations that accompany the bi-annual competition that they run.

The events are: patterns, sparring and breaking, and you can enter 1, 2 or all 3 events - it's up to you. Competitors are matched as closely as possible with similar grades and weights.

Happy birthday to us!

I can't quite believe it's been 7yrs since our first class opened! I'll be honest, it was very challenging to start a club from nothing, and there were many times I did wonder if I was doing the right thing!

But it's thanks to those first students who stuck it out with me each week that we are still going all these years later - their spirit and dedication was the motivation I needed to keep teaching. And how amazing to look at the club now, a thriving community of girls and women from all walks of life, united by their enjoyment of learning a martial art.

Happy International Women's day to all our students!

Us ladies were busy in Lincolnshire on Saturday to represent Region 5 at Master Brunger's seminar.

The seminar's primary focus was on developing effective kicking techniques. During the first half of the session, we concentrated on generating power in front snap, side piercing, and turning kicks, with special attention to utilising core strength—particularly beneficial when initiating kicks from the front leg and working with limited momentum.

The second half of the session emphasized how stances and footwork can be used to deliver kicks during sparring, particularly using the back leg to move forward dynamically. This approach required some adjustment as we’ve gotten used to the 'foot-to-foot' movement in so many of our patterns, but it reminded me of my BUTF days, when a constantly flicking side kick was an often-used technique for pushing an opponent out of the ring!

Regional training is happening this Sunday 8th March from 10am in Leicester, hosted by Leicester Taekwon-Do Academy.

Open to all belt grades (beginners and up), it's a fantastic opportunity to revise all the syllabus, particularly if you are considering grading this month, alongside students from across our region.

Cost is £10/student, payable at the door.

UK ITF Seminar with Master Brunger

On Saturday 7th March, Region 12 will host a technical seminar led by Master Matthew Brunger, former multiple World Champion and current UK ITF Technical Chair.

The seminar will cover technical kicking, as well as sparring application. It promises a challenging but enjoyable session where students can improve their skills, have fun, and learn directly from one of the UK ITF Masters. £25pp

The UK ITF Spring Nationals are being held on Sunday 22nd February. Open to all UK ITF-registered students (colour belts and black belts). Please let me know if you are interested in competing or going along to watch.
