Mehreen Kazmi recently accompanied a group from Lincoln’s Inn on a visit to The Hague. The trip included visits to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), where attendees learned about international criminal justice, the prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity, and the role of the rule of law in promoting justice around the world.

The highlights included an opportunity to observe a live reparations hearing and take part in a Q&A session with an ICC prosecutor. During the discussion, Mehreen asked about one of the Court's most significant challenges: the enforcement of arrest warrants and the practical difficulties faced by the ICC, particularly in cases where states reject or contest the Court's jurisdiction. The visit provided a thought-provoking insight into both the achievements and ongoing challenges of international criminal law.

We’re delighted to again be attending the annual Leicester Family Justice Day at City Hall next Friday, and very proud that Emma Burden has been central in its organisation.

It’s always an informative and engaging event, but it’s also a great opportunity to catch up with many of our instructing solicitors and others working across family law in a more relaxed setting. This year is particularly special as the event also celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Andrew Horner recently represented a father on a pro-bono basis in a highly unusual and deeply sensitive case.

Following the tragic death of the child's mother shortly after birth, the father found himself in a sudden and unexpected legal position. As the parents were unmarried and the birth had not been registered before the mother's death, he was unable to register his son's birth or acquire parental responsibility, despite the couple having another child together.

The court conferred parental responsibility on the father, ensuring that he could lawfully exercise parental responsibility for his newborn son and register the birth.

We are pleased that Mr Horner was able to assist in such an emotive and important matter and achieve the right outcome for his client.

A topical question answered in part by the highly informative Bar Standards Board's seminar attended by Sarah Cornish on the safe and responsible use of AI by all of those involved in the legal profession

The BSB's new guidance focuses on how legal professionals can recognise the use of AI by others and ensure ethical duties are fulfilled, embrace opportunities for appropriate use, whilst maintaining the professional responsibilities that come with its use.

The guidance addresses key areas including confidentiality, data governance, transparency, risk assessment and the application of the BSB Handbook to AI assisted practice.
