Former British, Commonwealth and European middleweight champion Tony Sibson was born in 1958.
Affectionately known as “Sibbo”, he was unfortunate to reach his peak in the middleweight division at the same time that Marvin Hagler was enjoying his.
After ending the career of Alan Minter, and dominating top contender Dwight Davison, the hugely popular Leicester man had hoped to tempt Hagler over to the Midlands but – due to the British crowd trouble that marred Marvin’s coronation against Minter – Sibson was forced to travel to the world champion’s country. The Massachusetts venue, though, had no influence on the outcome though, as the brilliant Hagler hacked the Englishman into defeat in six.
Sibson remained among the world’s best for the rest of his career – thrashing John Collins, losing a thriller to Don Lee, and besting Mark Kaylor – before an ill-advised trip to light-heavyweight resulted in defeat to WBC boss Dennis Andries. Sibson did secure one more world title try when, in his final outing in 1988, the emerging Frank Tate stopped the fading Brit in 10.
After the contest, Sibson announced his retirement and criticised the ‘fans’ who had descended upon Stafford’s Bingley Hall just before the main event with the sole intention of causing trouble.
Happy Birthday, Sibbo.
