De load weeks are common practice in the S&C world.

How do you approach this in grappling?

Redline until you have to take time off?
Train intuitively and listen to the body?
Schedule in a period of lower intensity?

Like anything it’s never black and white.

How do you approach this, if you even do?

Had a few no shows this week for trials.

I get it.

Your mind and your body like balance, routine and regularity.

So it’s easier to cancel or just not show when nerves kick in.

So what will it take?

Have you heard the sorry about the dog sat on a nail.

For days the dog is heard moaning, groaning and whimpering.

When a neighbour finally asks what’s up with the Dog.

The owner replies that he’s sat on a nail.

Why doesn’t he just get off? Asks the neighbour.

The owner replies;

It doesn’t hurt enough yet….

What nail are you sitting on?

Went to watch Odyssey last night.

Great film.

One thing stuck with me.

Odysseus’s son Telemachus has a bodyguard, trainer, teacher, guiding him.

His name?

Mentor.

3000 years later and we all know the reference.

We’ve got loads of them on our mats.

The 16 year old training in the adult class.

The 50 year old flying abroad to compete.

The 30 year old training around his kids.

The 20 year old up at 3am who still makes evening classes.

The 40 year old training around old injuries.

All mentors, whether they know it or not.

Just showing everyone else what’s possible around a normal, busy, complicated life.

Next week it will get worse.

Holidays start.
Kids off school.
Family days out.

The first thing to go will be your Jiu Jitsu schedule.

I get it.

I might even take my foot off the gas a little bit too.

It’s what you work for right?

Anyway.

We don’t have to derail our progress.

And feel like we’re starting from scratch come September.

Just keep ticking over.

MED = Minimum effective dose.

There’s enough sessions on the TT now to give a certain degree of flexibility.

If you can’t get in that week.

Get those trainers on and jog a few K’s
Get in the gym for an hour.
Get some stretching in.

My point is.

The work you do over summer.

Ticking the box.
Punching the clock.
M.E.D

Will pay dividends come September.

One of the pundits said something on Saturday:

To actually win the world cup, it’s never going to be pretty.

It’s gritty.
It’s scrappy.
It’s luck.
1-0s.
Rebounds.
Deflections.
Sometimes penalties..... Jesus!!

Not the beautiful stuff.
Just what works.

Same in Jiu Jitsu.
There’s so much happening in a roll/match.

So many variables.

It’s not always going to look clean.
Half the time it’s not even a position.
An ugly grip.
A sweep that barely worked.

Doesn’t matter.
You don’t need it to look good.
You need it to work.

Some of the best jiu jitsu isn’t pretty at all.
It’s just efficient.
Sometimes brutal.

Worth remembering next time you’re rolling and it feels messy.

Messy still counts.

If you’re worried about starting because you think you need to be good first.

You don’t.

Great work from James getting his Blue belt.

Injuries will happen in any contact/combat sport and James has had his fair share.

He remained committed and persevered setting a great example to his lad in the process.

Congratulations mate.

No Gi Fundamentals. [Tuesday 6:30pm]

The fundamentals aren’t just for beginners. They are the foundation that everything else is built on.

After a few years training.

I thought I knew the basics.

After a few more years.

I realised….

Against a fully resisting opponent there is nothing ‘Basic’ about the fundamentals.

But it’s the perfect place to start.

What quality in me keeps showing up and winning?

This is a journal prompt that I answer every morning.

I’m always trying to learn & Improve

Whether that’s on the mats or life in general.

Learning new skills.
Learning more about myself.
Learning from my failures.

What quality in YOU keeps showing up and winning?
