💡 Markup vs Margin — do you know the difference?

It sounds like a small detail, but getting this wrong can have a big impact on your profitability.

Many businesses focus on their markup without understanding what their actual margin is.

So, what’s the difference — and why does it matter?

Learn before you earn.

You can read hundreds of books, listen to endless podcasts and consume all the theory in the world — but none of it matters if you don’t apply it.

Real learning takes time to resonate.

Pause. Reflect. Ask yourself: “How does this actually apply to me?”

Knowledge only creates value when it changes what you do.

🚀 We’re heading into a world with more entrepreneurs than ever before.

Why? Because people increasingly want to be the director, not just the person completing tasks.

The people who thrive will be those who can:
🧠 Think creatively
🔄 Understand how processes connect
🤖 Know how to work with AI
💬 Communicate ideas clearly

AI won’t replace the people who understand how to use it strategically.

It will amplify them.

Are you building the skills to be the director not just the doer?

People aren’t your biggest problem. But understanding people might be your biggest challenge.

Over the last 5–10 years, work has become more complex. People are overwhelmed, working harder, and often feeling worse than before.

So what’s really going on? And more importantly, what can business leaders do about it?

People are both the biggest challenge and the biggest opportunity for businesses today.

What’s the biggest people challenge in your business right now?

Culture isn’t what’s written on the walls.

It isn’t the values displayed in reception.

And it certainly isn’t the words in your employee handbook.

Culture is what people experience when they walk through the door.

You can often feel the culture of a business before anyone says a word.

You can see it in:

→ How people speak to each other
→ How leaders respond to mistakes
→ Whether employees feel safe to challenge decisions
→ How accountability is handled
→ How quickly people make decisions
→ Whether people take ownership or wait for permission
→ What behaviour gets rewarded and what gets tolerated

A business can have the best values in the world written on a wall.

But if leadership behaviour doesn’t match those values, the real culture will always win.

Strong workplace culture is built through everyday behaviours, not corporate statements.

It comes from leadership, communication, trust, accountability, employee engagement and the standards that are consistently reinforced.

And here’s the important part:

Your people are constantly learning what your business really values by watching what happens not by reading what you say.

So ask yourself:

If a new employee walked into your business today, what would they immediately feel?

Trust?
Accountability?
Purpose?
Energy?
Fear?
Confusion?
Micromanagement?

Because that feeling tells you far more about your culture than anything written on the wall.

What’s one behaviour you believe has the biggest impact on workplace culture?

Why has it become so culturally acceptable to send emails outside of working hours?

The problem isn’t necessarily when the email is sent.

It’s the expectation that it needs an immediate response.

When out-of-hours communication becomes normal, it can quietly create a culture where people feel they always need to be available.

That can:

→ Blur boundaries
→ Increase stress
→ Reduce recovery time
→ Impact focus and performance

Sending an email at 10pm doesn’t have to mean you expect a reply at 10pm.

But if your team feels that it does, you have a culture problem, not an email problem.

Do you think out of hours emails have become too normal?

💡 There’s a hidden cost affecting almost every business: low productivity.

You might not see it clearly on a spreadsheet, but you’ll feel the impact:

📉 Cash flow pressure
💷 Rising labour costs
⏰ More hours for the same output
📈 Growth becoming harder to sustain

But productivity isn’t about squeezing more work out of your people.

It’s about getting more value from the resources you already have.

The best businesses don’t just ask:

❌ “How can we work harder?”

They ask:

✅ “How can we work smarter?”

Because when productivity improves, your people, your customers and your bottom line can all benefit.

💬 Where do you think your biggest productivity problem sits right now: people, processes, systems or priorities?

Are you running your business or is your business running you?

Without a clear plan, it’s easy to spend your days jumping from one problem to the next, reacting instead of moving forward.

A clear business plan gives you direction.

You need to know:

🎯 Where you’re going
👥 Who you’re trying to serve
📣 How you’re going to reach them
📈 What success actually looks like

More activity doesn’t necessarily mean more growth.

Sometimes the biggest step forward is deciding what to stop doing.

If you could fix one area of your business right now, what would it be strategy, clients, marketing or focus?

As a business owner, the big question is: Do we grow, stay where we are, or take a risk?

Every option comes with its own challenges and opportunities.

Growth brings opportunity, but also greater responsibility and risk.

Staying put can provide stability, but could mean missing opportunities.

Taking a risk could unlock the next level, but there are no guarantees.

And right now, one of the biggest challenges is making the decision and backing yourself.

You’ll hear plenty of opinions about what you should and shouldn’t do.

But ultimately, you have to understand your business, assess the risks, make the decision and have the conviction to stand behind it.

What are you choosing right now, grow, stay put, or take a risk?

Building a successful business starts with humility.

The moment you accept that you don’t know everything and that you’re not the best at everything you create space to:

📚 Learn from others
🌱 Grow as a leader
🤝 Bring in people with strengths that complement your own
🚀 Build a stronger business

You don’t need to be the smartest person in every room.

You need to be willing to recognise what you don’t know and surround yourself with people who can fill the gaps.

💬 What’s one thing you’ve learned you’re better off not trying to do yourself?
