Your Feet, Not Defeat.
Getting the right shoes for your road running habits can be a tricky business.
So here’s a starter’s guide.
➖If you’re buying your first pair of running shoes, it’s worth getting a gait analysis to assess if your feet have any special requirements, such as overpronation (the tendency to roll your foot inwards) or fallen arches (requiring greater support in the sole).
➖Your shoe size may well be a half size up from your daily shoe, to account for foot swelling, which usually occurs after upwards of 45 minutes continuous jogging/running.
➖Higher stacks (the plush cushioning under your foot) provide better protection to your joints over longer distances.
➖Space in the toe box to allow your toes to spread.
The more naturally they can move, the better they support your foot’s natural stability and spring mechanics to help drive you forward.
Your toes are not meant to be compressed in together!
➖And ultimately (and I’d say most importantly), test out any shoe you’re considering!
Often with gait analysis they will have a treadmill you can test run a variety of shoes on, as you want to make sure that not only are the above criteria all considered, that you find the shoe completely comfortable!
No stitching or seams pressing in the wrong position, no collar rubbing the outside of your ankle…
You’ll be wearing them in yes, but they need to be comfortable literally out of the box.
Then go put some km’s into them!!
