Today's the day!
After a summer of recharging, we're back!

In a little while, our rooms will be full of music, laughter and excited chatter once again.

Some children will be walking through the doors like they've never been away.
Others will be joining us for the very first time, with a few butterflies in their tummy.
Both are completely normal.

For me, the start of a new term is knowing that every child is beginning a new chapter.
New friendships will be made.
Confidence will grow.

Whether you're returning or joining us for the first time, we're so looking forward to seeing you.
Here's to another fantastic term together. ✨

Tomorrow we'll open the doors and start another Theatretrain year.

There'll be excitement.
There'll be nerves.
There'll be children who can't wait to get started.
And there will almost certainly be at least one parent standing in reception looking far more nervous than their child.

We've seen it before.

We'll probably see it again tomorrow.

And by the end of the morning, most of those nerves will have disappeared.

Behind the scenes, the teachers and I are getting ready too.

Music is being checked.

Registers are being printed.

Lesson plans are being finalised.

And I'm absolutely convinced I've forgotten something important.
I haven't.
Probably.

September is always fascinating.

Children walk back through the doors looking exactly the same and completely different at the same time.

A little taller.
A little older.
Usually carrying a brand-new water bottle.
Sometimes a brand-new hairstyle.

And somehow the children who felt brand new last year suddenly look like veterans.

A sure sign that Theatretrain is about to start again...

My inbox suddenly fills with questions.

What should they wear?

Can they bring a water bottle?

What happens if they're nervous?

Where do I park?

Don't worry I will answer those as many times as needed, I really don't mind!

One thing I've noticed over the years is that parents often spend far more time worrying about a child's first Theatretrain session than the child does.

By next Saturday, I'll have spoken to at least one parent who's convinced their child won't come through the door.

Then five minutes later that same child will be in a drama game, learning everyone's names and completely forgetting Mum or Dad exists.

It's happened often enough that it no longer surprises me.

My child never stops talking at home.

Then we get to a birthday party, a club or a new activity and suddenly they barely say a word.

Sound familiar?

One thing I've noticed over the years is that some children aren't lacking confidence at all.

They're simply deciding whether this new environment feels safe enough to show it.

I've had parents tell me their child is shy, quiet or nervous around new people.

A few months later, those same children are chatting to friends during break time, volunteering ideas in drama and looking completely different.

The confident child was there all along.

One week to go...

This time next week, our sessions will be in full swing again.

There'll be familiar faces running through the doors, new children taking those first brave steps into class, and teachers who are just as excited to be back as the students.

I always love the start of a new term.
It's a fresh beginning.
New friendships will be made.
Confidence will start to grow.

And little moments that seem quite ordinary now will become some of the highlights of the term.

If your child is joining us for the first time, don't worry if they're feeling a few butterflies. That's completely normal, and we'll be there to help them settle in.

I can't wait to see everyone next Saturday.

"𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺."

It's something I hear from time to time, especially at the start of a new term.
And honestly, it's completely understandable.

A new child walks into the room and sees children who've been coming for months or even years.

They know where to stand.
They seem so confident.

What they don't see is that those children were once standing exactly where they are now.

I've watched it happen so many times over the years.

A child compares themselves to someone who's further along the journey, without realising they're comparing their first few weeks to someone else's second or third year.

It's not really a fair comparison.

That's why we encourage children to focus on their own progress, not someone else's.

Can they do something today that felt scary a few weeks ago?
Have they made a new friend?
Do they feel a little more confident than they did when they first walked through the door?

Those are the comparisons that really matter.

I've learnt that confidence grows much more quickly when children stop trying to catch up with everyone else and simply enjoy taking their own next step.

"Do the best children always stand at the front?"

The answer is... not necessarily.

Where a child stands is about so much more than ability.

Sometimes we move children so they work with different people and build new friendships.

Sometimes it's because we want them to learn to perform in a different space.

Sometimes it's simply because the story we're telling works better with everyone in a different position.

One of the things we teach at Theatretrain is how to use the space around you.

Theatre doesn't stand still.
So neither do we.

Children are constantly moving, adapting and learning to perform wherever they are on the stage.

If a child is moved, it isn't because they've done something wrong or because someone else is "better".

It's because we're thinking about the whole picture.
The story.
The audience.
The group.

And helping every child become a confident performer, wherever they happen to be standing.
