📍 Bedfordshire + Online | Start here: The Tightly Wound Body ↓ Clinical Essential Somatics is Neuromuscular movement re-education that teaches people to regain voluntary control of muscles that have become involuntarily and chronically contracted due to adaptation to accidents, injuries, surgeries, major illnesses or on-going/repetitive emotional or physical stress. Thomas Hanna (Hanna Somatics) termed this state of chronically tight muscles that can't let go as Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) and described SMA as the root cause chronic pain. By improving the connection between the brain and the muscles people learn to regain sensation and motor control of muscles and movement. Chronically tight muscles affect physical structure and alter posture and movement. Examples of Sensory Motor Amnesia include:

• chronic back pain
• sciatica
• leg length discrepancy
• hip pain
• altered gait
• plantarfasciitis
• piriformis syndrome
• TMJ/TMD
• neck/shoulder pain
• scoliosis

Those suffering from SMA lose their ability to release and relax muscles and move freely. Clinical Essential Somatics is taught in 1:1 session with hands on work with the practitioner, focusing on the clients patterns of restricted movement and SMA. Groups classes, are weekly classes that teach Somatic movements and are suitable for those new to Somatics and those whom have undertaken clinical sessions.

'Essential Somatics' builds on the work of Thomas Hanna (Hanna Somtics), as well as bringing in the work of new pioneers in the field of Somatic Movement.

Something people ask me a lot, usually before we’ve even met, is “so what would you actually do?”

And the honest answer is… I don’t know 😅

I know that’s probably not what you’re supposed to say, or what people want to hear. But it’s the truth, and it’s kind of the whole point of how I work. Until we’ve met, until I’ve listened to you and we’ve had a look at what’s going on, your body, your history, your life, what you’re hoping for, I genuinely couldn’t tell you. It depends on so many things. And whatever we do, we decide it together, based on you, not on some fixed process I put everyone through.

Some people know me as a McTimoney chiropractor, and yeah, that’s maybe part of it. But between that, my MSc in Clinical Pain Management, and the years I’ve spent across movement, clinical somatics, rehab and strength training, I tend to see things a bit differently.

I’m interested in the whole picture, how it all connects, and how to help you feel better and trust your body again. That might be hands-on work. It might be movement, or strength, or learning to settle a nervous system that’s been stuck in high alert for years. Most of the time it’s a mix, and it changes as you do.

The people I work with have so often been passed around, had one little piece of them looked at at a time, and never really been seen as a whole person. That’s the bit I care about most.
..You’re not a list of separate problems. You’re one whole human, and there’s always a way in, wherever you’re starting from.

Of course the Strong Foundations courses follow a structure, and if you come to a group clinical somatics class then that has its shape too. But even then, I’m always adding in whatever I realistically can for the people in front of me, because that’s just how I work. You always get all of me. I don’t turn different parts of myself on and off depending on what you’ve booked 😊

So if you’ve ever thought “I don’t even know what I need, I just know something needs to shift” that’s honestly the perfect place to start. Give me a shout and we’ll figure it out together. No pressure at all.

From pain to possible.

One journey, any starting point, no limits.

What a lovely and emotional day at the Launch a Memory event in Poole today, to see my Dad’s name on the incredible all weather Shannon Class that serves out of Swanage.

We met so many wonderful volunteers and staff including one of the Coxswains Swanage.

I am so proud to support the RNLI particularly as I love watersports and know exactly how even with the best laid plans the Sea will always be in change.

I am even more proud to know that my Dad will be going on in spirit with that boat to Save Lives at Sea.

Ladies you are lifting everyday!
Your handbag,
The shopping,
A child,
Yourself,
A bag of compost,

And I can tell you for a fact often the bags you lift are heavier than the dumbbells that you’re lifting or are fearful of lifting.

Every exercise relates to a functional movement you already do with your body.

Rehab is doing it following injury
Strength training and “lifting” is doing it to get better at doing it.

Why?

To improve your physical health, strength, mental health, bone density, heart health, confidence the list goes on.

This isn’t about being a body builder, or an athlete (they are options of course) this is about being the best version of yourself that you want to be.

It’s about feeling confident in yourself and the gym!

It’s about being able to do all the things you want to do today, tomorow and in 10+ years time!

I kicked myself into shape when my Mum had stage 3 bowel cancer, because I wanted to make sure I had done everything in my power to be the fittest and healthiest version of myself that I had control over.

We need a why, a reason, and if that reason isn’t for yourself then what can you make it about right now? Mine was for my children before it was for me.

So whatever stage in your journey you are at we’ve got you’ve covered!

Coming to a gym near you this September 🍂

I’ve got something new on the way, and honestly, I can’t wait to tell you properly.

The Gym Clinic.

It’s the next level of working with me 1:1 in clinic.

My clinical knowledge in pain, rehab and movement, brought right onto the gym floor to help you build strength, safely.

Not personal training, something a bit different.

Rehab and strength training is all one line, it’s where you are in that journey that is the difference and how we structure it.

More coming very soon.

But if you’re already sitting there thinking “ooh, that might be just what I need”, drop me a message, I’d love to hear from you 💛
