Super exciting.
Big news out of Europe this week โ and it could mean MSC Group is about to enter one of the fastest-growing segments in cruising. ๐ข๐
According to a report from Italian maritime publication Shipping Italy, MSC Group is reportedly evaluating a MAJOR new project: launching European RIVER CRUISES under its Explora Journeys luxury brand.
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT โ this hasn't been confirmed by MSC yet. It's currently in the early evaluation stage. But if the reports are accurate, it would be one of the biggest cruise industry expansion stories of the decade.
โ WHAT'S REPORTEDLY BEING CONSIDERED
According to the report:
๐ข MSC Group is studying the European river cruise market
โจ The project would launch under Explora Journeys (MSC's LUXURY brand, not mainstream MSC Cruises)
๐ Possible rivers include the Rhine, Danube, Seine, Douro, Elbe, and Italy's Po
๐ Currently in evaluation stage โ no ship orders, no timeline, no launch details announced
If MSC moves forward, Explora Journeys would compete directly with established luxury river operators like Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld, and Scenic.
๐ WHY EXPLORA JOURNEYS FITS RIVER CRUISING
Explora Journeys was launched in 2023 as MSC's premium/luxury ocean brand. The brand is already positioned for:

๐ด Fine dining across multiple restaurants
๐๏ธ All-suite luxury accommodations
๐ A relaxed, refined onboard atmosphere

Those are basically the SAME elements luxury river cruise lines are known for. So Explora Journeys entering river cruising isn't a stretch โ it's actually a natural extension.

MSC/Explora wouldn't be the first ocean cruise line to eye the river cruise market:

Even without river cruises, Explora Journeys is investing โฌ3.5 BILLION in fleet expansion:

โ Explora IV โ April 2027 debut
โ Explora V โ 2027 (debuting with Asia itineraries)

Adding a river cruise fleet on top of that ocean expansion would make Explora Journeys one of the biggest luxury cruise investments in the industry.

For anyone who's only ever cruised on the big ocean ships, river cruising is a completely different experience:

๐๏ธ You sail RIGHT INTO cities and small towns โ often within walking distance of main attractions

It's a slower, more intimate style of cruising โ and it's exactly the sort of experience Explora Journeys is already known for on the ocean.

Nothing official yet. MSC Group would need to officially confirm the project, order ships, hire crews, and set launch dates โ a process that typically takes 2-3 years minimum from announcement.
If Shipping Italy's reporting is accurate, we could see an official announcement in the coming months.
