That is never the case when Tommy meets his junior fans here at TFA Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa

Tommy spent whole morning with our TFA pupils, watching them tee off, presenting prizes and just having a bit of fun with them.

Thanks Tommy for making lots of the boys and giris golfing dreams come true!

In this TFA 8ft putt drill, we know the PGA Tour average success rate for this length in tournament play, is 50% holed We get this from Strokes Gained, a system used on the Pga tour to correlate all statistical shot information The premise of this drill is that if you go through the gate for a point, you have a 50% chance of holing the 8 foot pot for two points. Here another one of our six and under golfing phenoms, Darwin Fallows, just 6, rips up the Tour stats and holes 100% or five out of five of his 8ft putts All of our games and drills are backed by learning science, confidence building and in this case a tour stat benchmark Darwin was another one of our TFA winners this weekend winning on the US kids regional tour. At the end of last term, our classes were almost full to capacity.

Yesterday one of my childhood hero’s passed away

Chi Chi Rodriguez a Puerto Rican Golf Pro went to the fairway in the sky.

He won 8 times on The PGA Tour

Why would this bother me much?

Well, when my dad decided to re take up golf, I asked him if I could go with him and play?

He was a bit reluctant to say “Yes” which puzzled me.

He explained that golf was difficult and the courses were too long for children

Despite this slight knock back, a week later my dad arrived home from his job at British Leylsnd with an old battered set of kids clubs in a brown vinyl bag.

The “wood” was actually plastic but the irons were pretty good 5,7 snd 9 with a putter

I was ecstatic. I read through the wear marks, rust and dirt, the name on the back “Chi Chi Rodriguez”

I polished them with my mums “Mr Sheen” and her favourite yellow duster. Made no discernible difference.

I set off I to my garden in picture and fired airflow balls (plastic balls with holes in) back at the house, over the tree, under the tree, around the tree, even through the tree.

I mowed and mowed the grass with a push mower and buried a tin can with a stick in it and chipped balls all the time.

My dream was born thanks to my loving dad and Chi Chi.

In this garden I invented lots of the games and drills I later showed a 6yr old Tommy

I often drive past this little house and think of my mum and dad who let me follow my dream into a sport and profession they didn’t know much about. Scrimping and saving for my upgraded clubs after dad snapped my beloved Chi Chi 5 iron on Stanley School field, one of my non legal practice grounds.

Chi Chi born into poverty, a family of 8 siblings, dad earned $18 a week

Thanks Chi Chi, you were part of my golf dream and I was there right at the start of Tommys. Maybe, just maybe without you, none of this would have happened.

When I get to Heaven I’m going to give Chi Chi a hug and tell him my son named his Larry Lamb Teddy Chi Chi.

He ll be made up!
