Last weekend was a trip to Stapleford hall for my favourite ride- lions tail!
We did a 2 day 120km this time with the company of the lovely Charlotte Robinson and Val.
Shark and val paced very well together while me and Charlotte spoke all the way round 😁
We both finished on the exact same heart rate of 47 😂

Overall me and shark got a grade 1 with a speed of 13.1kph

Thankyou to Paula and Kathy for organising this lovely ride again!!
Thankyou Charlotte for the company- very much enjoyed it 🙂
Thankyou Angela and Barry for your fantastic crewing again 🤗

Thetford 2- 1 day 120km CER 🐎

This weekend me, Sharqui, mum and crew went to the biggest ride of the season to try our first 1day 120km and first race ride!

I had my worries about how this may go for months, and i was more concerned as to whether this would be too much for Sharqui with the amount of riders + horses and the mass start than i was for the actual ride and the vettings 😂

I knew Sharqui could definitely do this distance in a day but i wasn’t as sure about me - especially at such a busy venue.

Friday evening-
was the first vetting- the wonderful Steph Wright plaited Sharqui’s mane up for me and we headed down.
We walked straight in and headed to our lane - Sharqui stood like a gem while having his heart rate taken and did a beautiful trot for the vet and passed
He was all good to start on Saturday ✅
Me less so - i was a nervous wreck and couldn’t speak (for the first time since i started egb!!) 😂🤦‍♀️

Saturday-
Loop 1 (40km)
5am wake up to allow time to be ready for our 7am start- i wasn’t feeling too nervous at this point.

We tacked up and headed over to the start line just before 7am
The steward announced the start and Sharqui and I hung back a few minutes to allow space between us and the 1* 120’s who started at the same time as us.
We set off and my nerves were immediately put to rest for the first few km 🫣
Shark decided today we were racing even if it was just us in the class 🤦‍♀️
We ended up not going too fast at about 14kph but i felt like i had clung on for dear life for the last 20km 😂
We came in and vetted pretty quick-
All good and safe to continue ✅

Loop 2 (30km)
At the start of loop 2 me and Shark paired up with Bella Fricker and Chip
Sharqui was very very excited at the amount of horses on course - more than we’d ever encountered in one loop, so I struggled to not let him charge past everyone - but luckily we managed a small trot just as we went past people 😂🫣
About 8km we had managed to gain a few brakes as it started getting a little quieter
We caught up with Izaro Anza who stuck with Bella and I for the rest of the loop - and Sharqui had calmed down perfectly - maintaining a perfect canter putting us to about 16.2kph for that loop- which is a lot faster than we’d ever done

We came in and took a little longer getting Sharqui to the vet as we wanted to make sure he was fed and hydrated
Once again he stood beautifully and did a beautiful trot up
Passed for the next loop ✅

Loop 3 (30km)
Me and Izaro had originally agreed to ride this loop together - however she started 2 minutes ahead of us, and we agreed we’d catch her up.
Sharqui had a bit of a sticky spot leaving the venue this time but once we had crossed the road he was well on his way!
We saw Izaro in the distance - but very closely followed by a group of UAE riders - so we decided to not catch up as i wasn’t too sure how he’d handle in such a large group

However we did meet another young rider, Chloe Videla, who was doing a 1* 100km and was also on a 30km loop, we agreed to stick together as we had shadowed eachother a little bit since the start of the loop
Our horses paced beautifully together and i think Sharqui quite liked Chloe’s horse ☺️

Sharqui was so much calmer this loop and i felt like i was back to our normal GER’s round home with how quiet the course was!!
We stayed at a steady 14kph this loop.

For the vetting Sharqui sped through giving him plenty of time to soak in the venue and cover people in his feed 😂😂 This vet hold was a new experience for all of us as he had to do a compulsory reexamination as required at these distances in a day so the vets can re check the horse hasn’t stiffened up or anything whilst having its rest and is still fit to go back out - so we juggled getting Sharqui to eat and drink and regularly walk around and he passed again good to go ✅

Loop 4 (20km)
i knew this loop was going to be challenging as it was only us and the 4 160km riders who we never saw all day!
Like Cirencester, i stuck Harry Styles on again and got all enthusiastic for Shark.

We had a bit of a sticky moment at the start and i had to lead him up the first grass track leading to the river - once he finally got the memo it was the final teeny tiny loop he was well away!!
I decided that this loop we should take it very steady as we had good speed and we just wanted a finish - so we did this loop at 9 kph
We had Harry Styles on the entire way round and i can’t quite tell if Sharqui’s a fan or if he’s trying to run from it 😂😂

We saw Maggie who posted a lovley video of us in our final few kilometres!

Coming in off the final loop we had a steady canter over the finish and Sharqui hadn’t realised the finish was separate from the vet gate entrance - so he tried to canter all the way up there 😂😂

We took about 8 minutes just getting him sloshed, fed and hydrated and we headed into the vet
This final vetting was very different compared to our usual GER vettings
They had the heart rate as usual which was 48! but they had 3 vets watch his trot up- and then write anonymously their opinions on the horses trot up on a voting slip, and then another heart rate after the trot up to test recovery time.

When Shelley said Shark had passed i was so thrilled and couldn’t believe we had actually succeeded at our first 120 + CER

Everyone at the awards ceremony turned to clap for Sharqui and i honestly think it made him light up so much - he looked at everyone with what i could only say the biggest smile ever 🥹🥹

We headed on over to the awards ceremony where mine and Sharqui’s name was announced for winning our class 🥇🤣 and also picking up Best Condition too!! - i walked him over to the front where he was shown all his prizes - and once again i honestly think he lit up 🥹

Thankyou so much to the organisers who helped make this ride possible as well as the army of volunteers!

Thankyou Steph and Sarah Wright for coming down this weekend to help us complete this ride (and putting up with the few tears shed on course 😂)

Thankyou Angela Brewell for also putting up with the tears and everything you’ve done to help us!!

Cirencester 3-day 160km ☀️
Last Thursday Me, sharqui and crew Headed down to Circenster, in hope of doing The 3 day 160km GER.

Thursday we set up the coral (in the blazing hot sun) wondering what on earth we were thinking doing a 160 in the following few days 😆
After a few long hot hours it finally started to cool, so we took sharqui into the shade for a bit of nice grass as his coral was a bit scarce of grass and in the full sun.

Friday we woke up at 5:30am and prepared for our first 32km loop, hopefully in the cooler part of the day.
At 7am we vetted for the first time and passed and headed out, after what was an amazing first loop, full off canters and mainly in the shade, we came into our vet gate, vetted and all passed the next 32km, so we both had lots to eat and drink and sharqui had his boots put on as it was a bit rocky on the first loop.
We headed back out and took the second loop very steady as his feet were feeling a bit sore.
By this point there were no other riders out so me and sharqui were getting a bit upset on our own, so my mum suggested i played music on my phone to cheer us both up, but i dismissed the idea.
A few minutes after i put Harry Styles on my phone and played it to see if it would make us happier- and sure enough it absolutely did!!
Sharqui soon reflected my energy and was soon off cantering and enjoying himself again!!
We came back in and vetted almost immediately and all passed!
Day 1 - 64km completed ✅
Me, Barry and Angela all had some tea and an ice cream and got things together for the next day.

Saturday we got up at 6:00am and got ready for the same as day 1- two 32km loops.
We vetted a little later at 7:10am so we could let the race riders get ahead- and we passed all good for our first 32km.
We set off out with 2 front boots on and Harry styles playing and we absolutely flew around the first loop, passing some race riders as well!!
We came in and vetted quickly- passing with good gut sounds as well!!
We both ate and drink up and were well on our way again- Harry styles playing and once again he flew around again!!
However, eventually when we reached a short track with a gateway either end, sharqui was very impatient with me and didn’t go through the gate how i lined him up to, resulting in him walking me into the gate post and dragging my knee over the top and catching the spike.
But he didn’t do this just once, he did the same thing on the second gateway, causing my knee to be very bruised and needing a hospital trip later in the week 😆 (had an xray and was just a soft tissue injury, nearly all healed now)
This made me upset and quite angry at him- but after a short phone call to my mum, we were happily cantering along again smiling through the pain 😆
Day 2- 64km completed
128km done ✅

Sunday- another 5.30am start, and another quiet day out on course, we vetted and passed with the vets just mentioning he was a little footsore- and to take it steady and potentially boot all 4 off his feet- as it was his back feet he was a bit sore on, and in previous days we had just had our fronts on
So that’s exactly what we did.
We had made up good time on the previous days and so we only trotted where necessary on the first 16km loop, listening to harry styles of course 😆
We came in and he looked a lot happier trotting up this time- so we were able to go out for the last 16km loop.
We set off for the final loop, listening to Harry 😆
Sharqui was insistent on cantering in the grass, and despite me being a bit hesitant to start with, i let him.
We walked where we needed and took everything cautiously so that he didn’t get sore again, and quickly came to the venue.
We had 30 minutes to present this time as it was the final vetting, so we sloshed him and he fed his face and had a big drink, however to all off our surprises he was ready to go after 5 minutes!!
He stood absolutely wonderfully- like he had been doing all weekend- and had a heart rate of 39bpm!!!!
We did our final trot up and he was all good as well as amazing gut sounds!!
Day 3 - 32km done 👍
160km completed!! ✅
We got a grade 1- which i was not expecting coming into the weekend with the weather forecast being what it was- i was just hoping for a finish!!
We also got first place prizes (out of just me and shark 😆)

Over the weekend we also saw a range of different animals on course!
We saw:
Herd of roe deer
Fox
Owl
Fallow deer!

Me and sharqui even got interviewed by The Hoof Boot Shop about why we have renegades and why there better compared to other hoof boots!!

3 years ago, when me and shark first started, i heard of the belt buckle award and the criteria that you needed to do to qualify for it- and i couldn’t imagine us doing such a distance- and while i haven’t quite qualified for the 1 day 160 km reward- im still so happy with how far we’ve come in the 3 years- and are now doing the distances i never imagined us doing!!

One of my goals for this season wasn’t just doing this distance but it was also making it in the magazines and newspapers- as well as being featured on the main page for endurance gb, and now we’ve made it on twice- so thankyou to everyone who’s made that happen!!

Thankyou so much to my amazing crew for helping us both through it this weekend- despite the heat!!

Thankyou to all the helpers over the weekend who helped to make this ride amazing!!

Thankyou to the amazing team of vets who watched sharqui’s condition all weekend!!

Finally thankyou to all the organisers for organising such an epic ride!!
