Sometimes, teaching children means taking a step back from what we had planned. ❤️
Children, just like adults, can struggle with anxiety, confidence and focus — and sometimes what they need most isn’t another drill or another technique. It’s a safe space to slow down, talk and reset.
This week, a few parents reached out to me about things their children were finding difficult. So this weekend, we pressed pause.
No warm-up. No rushing into karate.
Instead, we created a visual safety net. 🛡️
We talked about the people in our lives who make us feel safe, supported and confident. We built a reminder that when anxiety creeps in, we don’t have to face it alone, we know who we can turn to for support.
And then we came onto the mat.
With a little more confidence.
A little less anxiety.
And a reminder that it’s okay to slow down.
This is what martial arts is really about. 🥋
Not just learning how to punch, kick or block — but learning how to understand ourselves, manage challenges, build confidence and become stronger both on and off the mat.
Sometimes the biggest progress happens when we stop, listen and look at the whole person, not just the student in front of us.
At Warrior Spirit, we don’t just train warriors.
We help build them. ❤️🥋
🥋❤️ There’s something really special about this…❤️🥋
Watching a group of children move together, learn together and grow together is one of the best parts of teaching karate.
The repetition.
The concentration.
The little mistakes.
The determination to try again.
And those HUGE kiais that make you smile every time! 🔥
They’re learning so much more than blocks, kicks and punches.
They’re learning to listen, to focus, to persevere, to respect one another and, most importantly, to believe in themselves.
And hearing them count together in Japanese adds another lovely layer — connecting them with the language, culture and traditions behind the art they’re learning. 🇯🇵
But perhaps my favourite part is watching them become a team.
Different personalities. Different abilities. Different little characters… all standing together, supporting each other and giving their best. ❤️
And when they suddenly get it…
When the movements come together…
When the whole group is perfectly in sync…
That feeling is pretty special. 🥹🥋
These are the moments that remind us that karate is about so much more than learning to fight.
It’s about confidence, friendship, belonging, resilience and growth.
And watching these little warriors find their own strength along the way?
That’s why we do what we do. ❤️
Warrior Spirit — where little warriors learn, grow and belong. 🥋
At Warrior Spirit, we don't just teach children how to punch and kick – we teach them the skills they need for life. 🥋💙
Our Little Warriors (ages 4–6) learn through the adventures of Kenji and Baka, where every story teaches valuable lessons about confidence, resilience, kindness, discipline and courage.
The stories may have been created for our younger students, but our older children love them just as much!
One of the advantages of smaller classes is that every child has the opportunity to get involved. Today, my nine-year-old "boss" assistant stepped up to read to our Little Warriors. Watching confidence grow and leadership skills develop is one of the best parts of what we do.
At Warrior Spirit, every child belongs.
If you're looking for an activity that develops confidence, focus, fitness and friendships, we'd love to welcome you to the family.
