Last week, our instructor team was back training - but not on kata. Si ran a full First Aid at Work course for Jon and Alice, because being a good instructor is about far more than knowing how to throw a punch.
Well done to both of them for getting recertified. It's serious stuff (you'd want us to know exactly what to do if something ever went wrong in class) - but we still managed to have a laugh doing it. π§€
Every one of our instructors is trained, certified and regularly updated in:
β
Minimum 1st Dan black belt
β
Instructor Trained
β
Enhanced DBS checks
β
First Aid at Work
β
Safeguarding
β
SENCO (special educational needs) training
β
Trauma-Informed Coaching
β
Mental Health First Aid
β
Concussion & Head Injury Management
β
Serious Youth Violence awareness
β
Neurodiversity
β¦and more.
We are fully qualified and insured to work with children and at-risk adults, and we maintain our standards to the highest level required by our governing body, the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association (BMABA).
So when you step on our mats - or send your kids to train with us - you can be confident you're in safe, capable, properly trained hands, even if we appear a bit silly sometimes (Jon!) πͺπ₯

Why Our Karate Class Sometimes Looks Like a Boxing Gym
Padwork in a karate dojo? Cross-training with boxing? It's not modern dilution - it's actually a return to karate's original practical roots.

Something we hear from parents a lot - their kids seem to focus better at school after starting martial arts. π€
Honestly, it makes a lot of sense when you think about what we actually do in class.
Every session is built around watch, listen, do. Over and over. Kids get really good at switching into that mode - and it starts carrying over into other parts of their life without them even realising.
There's the energy side of it too. A kid who's had a good hard session is a lot calmer the next morning. Teachers notice it. Parents notice it at homework time. π
And then there's the belt system. It teaches them that progress takes time, that you don't skip steps, and that showing up consistently matters more than being naturally talented. That's a lesson that sticks way beyond the dojo.
None of it happens overnight. But it does happen. Da iawn to all our little ones working hard at the moment! π₯
