Glasgow based Ashfield were the visitors to Lockerbie on Saturday for a 2nd round South Region Challenge Cup tie. Mids started better than their more illustrious, second tier West of Scotland opponents, and it was no surprise when Benji Wagner on 8 mins controlled a cross on his chest, swivelled and sent a terrific overhead volley into the top of the net. For five or ten minutes the Lockerbie side held their own before Ashfield stepped up a gear and with some top notch back to front fast football they started to dominate. They levelled with a penalty after a Dani Carcu mistimed tackle and edged in front 3-1 at half time with 2 further strikes.
HALFTIME: Mids 1 - 3 Ashfield
The second half continued with Ashfield on the ascendancy although Darren Monteith should have done better when Robbie Carcu set him up right in front of goal on 60 minutes. That would have reduced the leeway and brought the Mids right back into the game but, as it was, Ashfield continued their dominance, missing a few chances, and with 2 further goals in the last 5 minutes they ran out deserved 5-1 winners.
